Kanaskat-Palmer
Overview
Kanaskat-Palmer State Park offers a serene escape nestled along the banks of the Green River in Ravensdale. Spanning over 300 acres, this Washington state park is renowned for its unique combination of shoreline access and lush forest trails. Unlike bustling commercial resorts, this destination provides a peaceful atmosphere where the sound of rushing water defines the experience. It serves as a premier spot for those looking to immerse themselves in the natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest while staying relatively close to the metropolitan areas of the Puget Sound.
Location & Surroundings
Situated in South King County, the park is tucked away in the scenic Green River Gorge. The surrounding landscape is characterized by steep canyon walls and dense evergreen canopies that create a secluded feel. Despite its proximity to urban centers like Seattle or Tacoma, the location feels worlds away, offering a rugged backdrop of moss-covered rocks and deep river pools. The geography here is particularly notable for its dramatic river bends and the geological history carved into the sandstone cliffs by the river.
Amenities & Park Features
The park accommodates RV travelers with utility campsites that provide both water and electricity. While it maintains a rustic charm, visitors have access to essential comforts including modern restrooms and coin-operated showers. A convenient on-site dump station is available for self-contained rigs to use before heading home. The campsites are generally well-spaced, providing a degree of privacy among the towering trees. For those traveling with larger groups, there are also picnic shelters that offer a communal space to gather after a day of river exploration.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
This location is a haven for water sports enthusiasts, particularly those interested in whitewater kayaking and rafting through the challenging rapids of the Green River. Anglers frequently visit to test their luck with catch-and-release fishing in the cold river waters during the appropriate seasons. For land-based activities, the park features several miles of forested hiking trails that wind through the woods and along the river edge. Additionally, the historic town of Black Diamond is just a short drive away, offering local bakeries and a glimpse into the region coal mining heritage.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is an ideal match for outdoor adventurers who prioritize river activities and natural settings over luxury resort amenities. It is a fantastic choice for families seeking a traditional camping experience where the focus is on wildlife viewing and hiking. Because of its manageable size and proximity to the city, it also appeals to weekend travelers looking for a quick nature fix without a long drive. If you enjoy the sounds of a rushing river and the smell of fresh pine, this park provides the perfect rustic retreat.

It was a perfect location for me. About 45 min from south Seattle and the Puyallup Fairgrounds. No mobile access for me except in specific spots of satellite texts service. Overall, when I was there, it was a quiet peaceful park. A few trails. Entertaining and educational experience watching salmon migrate up the Green River. Tried to get some pics.

Super nice campground, each campsite has room for at least 2 cars and 3-4 tents. Has a bench and fire-pit. There is also enough foliage to separate each campsite so you don't feel like you can see each other's campground. Reservations are made online and I had to buy a discovery pass so I did it in person at the office because my local Walmart printer was down. The bathroom has showers with hot water from 6am-10pm

Went on a pretty hot day and there’s was a lot of shade available near the water. The area closest to the parking lot gets busy with lots o’ kids during summer so if you want a more chill experience you may need to walk the trail a bit that runs along the river. Also, witnessed someone almost drowning so if you can’t swim..maybe a life jacket would work as the current was fast.

Very lush park along Green River. There are some pretty views of the river from a trail along the riverbank. The trail is rough in a couple places, sturdy boots and hiking pole would be helpful but not absolutely necessary. There is a decent campground with fair privacy.

This is for the area by the river, easy access minutes from the parking lot. Lots of picnic tables and grills, with trails to the river. Very nice clear river, last time I was here the tide was low and there were fish everywhere that you could literally touch them. Too bad I don’t remember when that was, I was hoping it was today but it wasn’t. 😭 I wanted salmon so bad today, Oh well. Maybe next time.
