Kemp's Kamp

Overview

Established in the heart of the Black Hills, Kemp's Kamp provides a classic South Dakota camping experience with a personal touch. This family-owned and operated park is known for its serene atmosphere and commitment to maintaining the natural beauty of the landscape. Travelers often seek out this location to enjoy an authentic retreat that feels secluded while remaining remarkably close to the region's most famous landmarks.

Location & Surroundings

Located just two miles from the entrance of Mount Rushmore, the park is tucked away along the banks of Battle Creek. The property is surrounded by towering ponderosa pines, which provide ample shade and a sense of privacy for visitors. Its position in Keystone allows for easy access to the town’s amenities while keeping guests immersed in the rugged, rocky terrain characteristic of the Black Hills National Forest.

Amenities & Park Features

The park caters to modern travelers with a variety of site options, including full hookup RV sites with 30 and 50-amp service. Guests can take advantage of the heated outdoor swimming pool during the summer months, which is a favorite for families after a long day of sightseeing. Other essential facilities include clean restrooms, hot showers, and a laundry room. Each site is typically equipped with a picnic table and a fire ring, perfect for evening gatherings under the stars.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Positioned as a prime basecamp, the park is a short drive from Mount Rushmore National Memorial and the scenic Iron Mountain Road. Visitors are also within reach of Custer State Park, where the famous Wildlife Loop offers glimpses of bison and elk. For a bit of local history and entertainment, the town of Keystone offers the 1880 Train, local gold mines, and various shops and dining options that capture the spirit of the Old West.

Who This Park Is Best For

Kemp's Kamp is ideal for families and nature enthusiasts who prefer a rustic, wooded setting over a paved resort. Because it offers a blend of convenience and natural charm, it suits those who want to be close to the action of Keystone without sacrificing the peaceful sounds of a running creek. It is a top choice for RVers looking for a well-maintained, scenic home base while exploring the iconic wonders of South Dakota.

Wonderful campground nestled in the beautiful Black Hills of SD! We enjoyed a full hook-up campsite and also a small swimming pool and shower facilities. The showers aren't anything fancy, but do the job. The quiet hours are from 10 pm to 7 am, so we never had to worry about it being too noisy. Things were kept clean. It was also right next to the track for the 1880 Train and it was fun to watch the train go by:) It was very conveniently located just a couple miles from cute little Keystone downtown! I'm guessing they must be on a well because the water smelled pretty bad and it was kinda tight getting in and out of our campsite, but other than that, great campground! We would stay there again:)

Beautifully quiet and well appointed campsite near Mt Rushmore. We hadn't reserved a tent pitch, but the owner was very welcoming and checking in was easy. Great facilities - very clean. No road noise at all and just some wild turkeys and deer to greet us in the morning. We'd definitely stay again - thank you!

This place was great. Very clean, and all amenities you could want. The rv spots are little close the road if the side-by-sides are racing by. But other than that it was perfect, no noise at night. Would definitely recommend this place, close to all parts of the park.

My family spent a week in a 2 bedroom hillside cabin. Exceeded all expectations. The cabin was VERY clean, comfortable, the view was great and it felt secluded yet it was a great location close to Keystone. The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. Would stay here again for sure.

Absolutely adorable and well kept campground. It is tiny but was able to accommodate us just fine. The staff was so friendly. Only downfall were half tall bathroom doors, I appreciate a bit more privacy

Worst campground I’ve ever stayed at! First of all I booked my site almost a year in advance. They don’t do email confirmations but assured me I had my dates. I took notes and had them upon arrival. I get there and am told I do not have the dates I asked for. I showed them my notes but they meant nothing because they took notes and mine were automatically wrong. The girl they had upfront was missing a few people skills so I called for the owner. I was told the only way to accommodate me was for me to move after one night. (in a trailer, you all know what a pain that is), but I reluctantly agreed, as it was too late to find a place on short notice. I went out fishing on that moving day and lost track of time. Got back 1/2 hour after the next person was allowed to park and setup (2-1/2hours after checkout time). The owner (Tom) shows up and tells me people have been waiting 2 hours even though they couldn’t setup until 1/2 hour before I got back. The owner talked to me like I did it on purpose and kicked me out of the park and would not refund my prepaid last day or honor my last night stay! Now I know where the girl upfront learned her people skills! If things go wrong here you will not be believed or given any benefit of the doubt. BUYER BEWARE!!! Not to mention your notes mean nothing! No email confirmation allows them to do as they want! Behind the times? Or just convenient for them?

Wonderful Campground! Sweet and kind owners, very clean showers and bathrooms, quiet, surrounded by magnificent nature. Near to Mount Rushmore and other attractions, close to Keystone which has nice restaurants and shopping. We had perfect experience. We recommend. We drove from North Carolina on our Motorhome and we are very thankful to find this awesome spot.

Beautiful setting and a beautiful campsite. We stayed in site number 1 next to the office and near the pool. The sites were a good size, level and each had their own very nice picnic table. The pool was sparkling clean and the bathrooms were clean with high pressure hot water. Wonderful location two minutes from Keystone and 5 minutes from Mt Rushmore. We had a very nice time here.

We tent camped here for a few nights and it was amazing. It’s less then 2 minutes from the town of Keystone. The staff working seemed very friendly & pleasant. It’s a beautiful view. The bathrooms were very nice and close to the campsites. It was nice that each tent campsite had shelters with a picnic table. We didn’t swim in the pool but that looked nice as well. We definitely will be coming back here!!

If I could give them 10 stars I would. The owners are wonderful people. We had cabin 7 then 2 tent spots down below. The tent camping was level and having the covered picnic tables, and grill was very nice. The have laundry facilities that are nice and clean. The best part was the cabin. I cant gush enough about the cabin we had the one up the side of the mountain. The view was amazing. Beds comfortable, it was quite and serene. We cooked on the grill as a deer walked by our patio. The kitchen is equipped with cooking utensils, pans and dishes. The bathroom is huge and has wonderful water pressure. We are already planning a trip for the fall and will be staying in the cabin.
