Kenai National Wildlife Refuge/Upper Skilak Lake
Overview
Upper Skilak Lake Campground offers a quintessential Alaska wilderness experience within the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge. Located off the gravel Skilak Lake Road, this rustic destination provides a peaceful alternative to the busier roadside stops. Managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, it is designed for those who appreciate a rugged natural setting over modern resort conveniences. The atmosphere is quiet and immersive, perfect for those seeking to disconnect from the modern world and experience the raw beauty of the Kenai Peninsula.
Location & Surroundings
The campground is nestled along the turquoise shores of Skilak Lake, a massive glacier-fed body of water. The surrounding boreal forest creates a dense, green canopy, while the backdrop of the Kenai Mountains offers a dramatic skyline. Because it is accessed via the 18-mile Skilak Lake Road loop, visitors should prepare for dusty or washboard conditions typical of Alaska backcountry routes. This remote location ensures that the star-gazing and wildlife sounds are uninterrupted by highway noise and traffic.
Amenities & Park Features
As a primitive camping area, Upper Skilak Lake provides basic amenities suited for self-contained RVs. You will find vault toilets and a hand-operated water pump, but there are no electrical or sewer hookups available. Each site features a steel fire ring and a picnic table. The park also includes the following features:
- A developed boat launch for easy water access to the lake.
- Generously spaced campsites that offer significant privacy.
- Interpretive signs detailing the local ecosystem and history.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty of recreation within a short drive. The Skilak Lookout Trail offers breathtaking panoramic views of the lake and the Kenai River valley. Fishing is a primary draw, with the nearby Kenai River world-famous for its salmon runs. Wildlife viewing is exceptional here; it is common to spot brown bears or moose roaming through the refuge’s diverse ecosystems. Kayaking on the lake provides a unique perspective of the surrounding mountains and glaciers.
Who This Park Is Best For
This location is ideal for boondockers and adventure seekers who prioritize solitude and scenery over luxury. It is a fantastic choice for photographers and hikers looking to immerse themselves in the Alaskan wild. Due to the gravel access road and smaller site footprints, it is best suited for small-to-mid-sized RVs or truck campers rather than large motorhomes. If you want an authentic connection with nature and a quiet place to rest between adventures, this is the place to park your rig.

Fish Bush
Fun little campground with a nice boat launch. Beach is mainly 3” +\- rocks and the outhouses are some of the best retro I’ve seen in South Central AK. About 10 tent sites along the beach that are very easy to walk to on a well maintained/Paved path

I was at the lake several times over the last summer. I love this place. Storms can come up suddenly so make sure you don’t get caught on the lake if it starts to get bad. Absolutely stunning beauty.

12 to 15 RV sites, 12 walk in tent sites. Two pit toilets side by side in the RV camp area. Two pit toilets in parking lot of walk in tent sites.

Very quiet, clean. Beautiful lake with nice scenery. The dirt road in was about 8.5 miles and has some rough spots. Saw black and grizzly bears. Had a fire pit. I would stay here again.

My second favorite site. Great location and scenery. Clean restrooms. Potable water available via hand pumps. A small creek for back ground noise, birds, bears Etc. No fires now...be very careful on the lake. Wear a PFD!

Would highly recommend to friends. Beautiful surroundings by the lake. Enjoyed it very much- camping spots were not too close together & camp host very friendly.

Clean bathrooms, quiet camping spots. Bring bug spray and bear spray.

As soon as we pulled up, there was a mama bear and her two cubs playing in the grass. Avoid the bathroom - it’s pretty nasty and best to go in the woods. The lake was stunning and plenty of hikes to check out. Get a boat tour if you can to explore nearby ranges.

Back Country. Few people. Seen Alaskan state trooper in a un marked Truck. Lots of Hiking and Boating. The Dragon Fly Size mosquito are no joke. Preparing for them is best not something you should get
