Kootenai/McGillivray

Overview

McGillivray Campground, managed within the Kootenai National Forest, offers a serene escape on the eastern shore of Lake Koocanusa. Situated near Libby, Montana, this destination is defined by its rugged beauty and direct access to vast, clear waterways. It provides a classic outdoor experience where the focus remains entirely on the stunning natural landscape and peaceful mountain surroundings rather than modern commercial luxuries. It is a premier spot for those looking to immerse themselves in the quietude of the Pacific Northwest.

Location & Surroundings

Tucked away in the scenic northwest corner of Montana, the park is enveloped by the Kootenai National Forest. The towering peaks of the Cabinet Mountains provide a dramatic, jagged backdrop to the expansive reservoir. Travelers will find themselves fully immersed in a dense forest of larch, pine, and fir trees, which offer excellent privacy and a cooling canopy during the warm summer months. The location feels remote, yet it is accessible enough for those traveling the scenic corridors of Montana.

Amenities & Park Features

As a traditional Forest Service site, the amenities prioritize essential needs for self-contained RVers and campers. The park features well-maintained paved roads and level parking pads designed to accommodate a variety of rig sizes. Visitors have access to clean vault toilets and potable water spigots located throughout the loops. Each individual site is equipped with a sturdy fire ring and a large picnic table, making it easy to enjoy campfire meals under the star-filled big sky.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Water recreation is the main attraction here, supported by an on-site concrete boat launch and a dedicated swimming area for hot afternoons. A short trip from the campground leads to the spectacular Kootenai Falls and Swinging Bridge, one of the largest free-flowing waterfalls in the region and a sacred site for local tribes. Additionally, the Libby Dam offers fascinating tours and birdwatching, while the surrounding wilderness provides endless miles of trails for hikers and mountain bikers to explore.

Who This Park Is Best For

This location is ideal for travelers who appreciate off-grid camping and wish to trade cell service for scenic vistas. It is a fantastic choice for families seeking a lakeside summer vacation or outdoor enthusiasts interested in boating and trophy fishing. Those who value a quiet, rustic atmosphere over the amenities of a high-end commercial resort will find this forest gem perfectly suits their travel style and desire for adventure.

A wonderful place for a church camp out! Swimming and cliff diving! I had my first inter tube ride and slept in a hammock for the first time.

Camp host Tom was amazing—friendly, full of great tips, and quick with a laugh. He keeps the park and amenities spotless, making it a pleasure to stay. The campground itself is stunning, with crystal-clear water perfect for swimming or just relaxing by the shore. We can’t wait to come back!

Love this secluded treed campground. Level sites, easy walk to the boat launch/beach, and friendly host. No hook -ups or cell service.

Very clean and secluded. The campground was not very busy when we were there which was nice. No cell phone service which was good for our yearly getaway.

Good camp spot the only downside is that there is no bowls included. Had to eat out of cups.

Delightful place to unwind. There isn't cell service, and that's a good thing. It's kept clean and well maintained, so you can genuinely sit back and enjoy the bird calls and forest smells and sights. I will visit again
