Kootenai/Peck Gulch
Overview
Peck Gulch Campground, managed by the Kootenai National Forest, offers a peaceful lakeside retreat on the eastern shore of Lake Koocanusa. Situated near Eureka, MT, this recreation area provides a classic Montana outdoor experience characterized by towering pines and direct water access. The area serves as a primary hub for summer recreation, blending forest tranquility with waterfront activity. It is an ideal spot for those looking to disconnect and enjoy the rugged beauty of the Northern Rockies in a natural setting.
Location & Surroundings
Located just southwest of Eureka, MT, Peck Gulch is nestled in a landscape defined by the massive Lake Koocanusa reservoir and the surrounding Purcell Mountains. The campground is positioned in a sheltered bay, providing protection from the wind while offering expansive views of the blue water. This remote setting ensures a quiet atmosphere away from the bustle of the main highway, making it a true wilderness gateway. The proximity to the Canadian border also makes it a popular choice for international travelers exploring the region's natural corridors.
Amenities & Park Features
As a Forest Service site, the amenities focus on essential needs rather than luxury resort features. Visitors will find vault toilets and a hand pump for potable water. Each campsite is equipped with a picnic table and fire ring for evening gatherings. The standout feature is the concrete boat ramp, which makes it a primary destination for motorized watercraft and fishing trailers. While most sites are spacious enough for various RV sizes, travelers should be prepared for dry camping as there are no electrical hookups or dump stations on-site.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The primary draw is Lake Koocanusa, where travelers can enjoy fishing for rainbow trout or spending the day water skiing and kayaking. For those who prefer land-based adventures, the Ten Lakes Scenic Area is a short drive away, offering miles of alpine hiking trails and stunning vistas. Additionally, the Kootenai River provides legendary fly fishing opportunities, while the nearby town of Eureka offers local shops, breweries, and historical sites for a quick afternoon excursion into the local community.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is best suited for self-contained RVers who appreciate the tranquility of boondocking. It is a fantastic choice for families with boats and outdoor enthusiasts who prioritize scenic lake views over resort-style amenities. If you are looking for a quiet stopover while traveling through Northwest Montana or heading toward British Columbia, Peck Gulch offers a serene and budget-friendly alternative to crowded private parks, provided you come prepared to live off your batteries and water tanks.

We really enjoyed this dry campground! The campsites were big, with a good amount of elbow room and we enjoyed being there mostly by ourselves. Pit toilets were fairly clean. We used our water shoes to get down to the lake because of how rocky the shoreline is. No cell phone service. The lake is beautiful and it was easy to get into our campsite. The road going down is quite narrow. Go slow as traffic coming up has the right-of-way. We didn't have any issues get down or up pulling a 14' trailer. I would definitely stay here again!

Boondocking at its best. Easy RV parking and tent camping right on the lake. Plenty of sun for folks with solar generators. It does get windy here at times, but overall a place to camp. It was a weekend, and there were plenty of empty campsites. No cell phone reception here. Water and pit toilets available. Also a boat ramp and parking is available.

16$. Beautiful. Few people at the end of August into September. However there are even better sites 3mins before this place down an un marked road. off road vehicle needed for that, though.

I'd stay here again. Great for kayaking right out of the campsite, nice spaces, and not too crowded. Watch where you camp if it's.going to rain, some of the sites will flood in a downpour.

Nice and clean primitive camp ground. All sites with fire rings. Easy access. Lake side location. Family oriented. Very close to good rock climbing. Location has nice paved single boat ramp and dock.

Beautiful valley , scenic river, rather barren campsites. Little firewood, primitive fire pits, pit potties. Windy.
