Kumbrabow State Forest

Overview

Kumbrabow State Forest offers a secluded retreat within the high-altitude wilderness of West Virginia. Spread across nearly 9,500 acres, this forest is known for its rugged beauty and the dense Allegheny Mountain canopy. It provides an escape from the modern world, where the primary sounds are the rustling leaves and the rushing waters of Mill Creek. This is a place where travelers can truly disconnect and immerse themselves in a tranquil mountain atmosphere.

Location & Surroundings

Situated near Huttonsville in Randolph County, the forest sits at elevations ranging from 3,000 to nearly 4,000 feet. This high elevation ensures cooler temperatures during the summer months, making it a popular destination for those fleeing the heat. The area is defined by steep ridges and deep valleys, with the Mill Creek stream providing a central focal point for the landscape’s natural character and local ecology.

Amenities & Park Features

The Mill Creek Campground within the forest is designed for those who appreciate primitive camping. There are 13 rustic sites available that can accommodate smaller RVs and trailers. Each site is equipped with a picnic table and fire ring, while the campground provides a hand pump for water and basic pit toilets. Because there are no electric or water hookups, visitors should arrive fully prepared for a self-contained stay deep in the woods.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor recreation is the main draw here, with over 12 miles of hiking trails to explore throughout the forest. Anglers often visit to cast for trout in the native brook trout streams that crisscross the terrain. For those looking to venture further, the forest is located near the Monongahela National Forest and the popular Snowshoe Mountain Resort. Nearby mountain towns like Elkins offer local dining and West Virginia heritage sites.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is ideal for adventurous RVers traveling in smaller rigs, camper vans, or truck campers who prefer solitude over resort-style luxury. If you enjoy off-the-grid living and want to experience the Mountain State in its most natural form, this forest is a perfect fit. It is best suited for travelers who do not require modern hookups and seek a deep, quiet connection with the great outdoors.

The State Forest is beautiful and great for outdoor enthusiasts. 2 star review because $63 (August) for the smallest campsite I've ever stayed in with no amenities is simply unreasonable. I've never ever stayed at such an expensive camp site anywhere in the US and compared to some of the full amenities campsites that are within an hour drive for $5-$10 a night it's simply not worth it. Maybe the cabins are a better deal if you are planning an overnight stay. This is a huge shame because the location is awesome and the sites are pretty nice. Just not worth $30 a night after tax. Lower these prices to something reasonable and this would easily be a 4-5 star but I can't stress enough how bad these prices are when comparing to literally any other camp site in the state.

My favorite most underrated state park(forest) in WV. I absolutely love this place & would spend so much more time here if I could. I'm glad I finally got my girls there to experience it with me too! The campground is very rustic & pretty close to off-grid living if you're into that type of thing. The upper part of the campground had a nice little playground area as well for the kids. Mill Creek Falls is always the perfect place for a nice little swim too!

A quiet place surrounded by Mill Creek and mountains. Beautiful scenery. The campground had a playground in the center so the children were entertained. A track to ride bikes and Mill Creek waterfalls is just four miles away.

Gorgeous WV State park located in Randolph county. We stayed in the rustic cabin #5 and loved it. Everything you need is included. The cabins sit in a valley and is very peaceful and relaxing. There is a gorgeous waterfall right out from cabin 1. There is also a campground and picnic areas with a playground. There are hiking trails all over the park that lead to some of the prettiest Mountain View’s. Highly suggest making the trip to visit this WV state park.

Had a wonderful time. Loved the mountain air. Friendly and informative staff. Stayed in the cabins. Clean, rustic, exactly as described. Only feedback, the trails were narrow and some wildly overgrown making it difficult for children to traverse and parents to relax.
