Lake Fausse Pointe

Overview

Lake Fausse Pointe State Park offers a unique immersion into the heart of the Atchafalaya Basin. Located in St. Martinville, this destination serves as a gateway to the largest river swamp in the United States. It provides a peaceful retreat where the natural melodies of the cypress swamp replace the noise of urban life. Visitors can expect a landscape dominated by towering trees and wandering waterways that define the soul of Cajun country.

Location & Surroundings

The park is situated on the edge of a vast wilderness, bordered by the Atchafalaya River and the Dauterive Lake area. This remote setting ensures that campers are surrounded by lush vegetation and diverse local wildlife. Accessing the park involves a scenic drive through the lowlands of St. Martin Parish, where the elevation remains low and the water levels dictate the rhythm of life. It serves as a natural buffer between the developed world and the deep woods.

Amenities & Park Features

RV travelers will find campsites equipped with water and electrical hookups, many of which are tucked into the deep shade of the hardwood forest. The park features a convenient boat launch, providing immediate access to the labyrinthine waterways of the basin. On-land facilities include climate-controlled restrooms with showers, a playground for families, and several miles of boardwalks and hiking trails that keep visitors comfortably above the damp swamp floor while they explore the terrain.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

While the park itself is the primary draw, its proximity to St. Martinville allows visitors to explore the rich Acadian history of the region. You can visit the famous Evangeline Oak or take a short drive to the historic Longfellow-Evangeline State Historic Site. Nature lovers should take advantage of the designated canoe trails within the park, which offer some of the best bird-watching opportunities in Louisiana for spotting herons and egrets.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is an ideal match for nature photographers and paddlers who want to experience the raw beauty of a Louisiana swamp. It is best suited for RVers who prefer a rustic, quiet atmosphere over a commercial resort experience. Families looking to educate their children about diverse ecosystems will find the environment incredibly rewarding. If you enjoy backcountry exploration and falling asleep to the sound of nature, Lake Fausse Pointe is the perfect stop.

The park was beautiful and completely surrounded by nature. The closest grocery store is about 25-30 minutes away. Due to the time of year, we did deal with a ton of mosquitoes. The staff was friendly and helpful and drove through the campground regularly to survey the area. It was an extremely relaxing trip (other than the mid-day mosquito attacks!)

Great park, friendly staff. Word of warning to new comers don't follow GPS in from the south on levee rd, 14 miles you will regret. Most sites are nice and spacious but many the design engineers weren't RV smart. Many have water and electric on the wrong side and poorly located make sure you have long enough hoses and power cords will go again

We stayed one night on our way to Florida. Our full hook up waterfront campsite included a dock that extended over the river. Several alligators cruised by our dock in the evening. It felt like a true Louisiana bayou adventure. A rare chance to observe wildlife up close in its natural habitat. Be careful with dogs in this area. The gators showed zero fear of humans. The park itself is well maintained, with clean restrooms and friendly staff. The small trail system is easy to navigate and offers a great way to explore the surrounding wetlands on foot but wear a lot of bug spray. This is a great park and I wish we had planned for it to be more than an overnight. We will definitely be back.

Very nice. Trails are excellent. No the internet is very limited but that's why they call it camping. Rv spots are pretty much level

Hidden Gem! We spent 5 days here from west Texas and it was everything we could have hoped for! Beautifully maintained, clean showers and very quiet. Wildlife all around and docks to fish off of.

This is a beautiful park located in the Atchafalaya basin. Many of the sights are right on the water and have a dock/ deck over the water and there are some very good trails to explore in the park. It's a great place to disconnect from everyday life and slow down because there's no cell reception in the park. We had to drive eight miles to get a usable signal. Plan ahead. There are no close stores for groceries.

Okay folks, listen up got the tourist from Wisconsin perspective for ya! 1….GO HERE NOW! Stop what you’re doing and go kayaking with the alligators, best creepy thrills. So,so many water birds and turtles galore, peace and tranquility abound 2…Do not listen to google maps when coming from the south and go on atchafalaya basin levee road for 14 miles, it is a gravel road, and full of pot holes. Google says you are supposed to be going 55 on this road, so it take way longer than they say. The park tells you to loop around from the north. Listen to them. 3…those cabins on the water are looking amazing, hang right over the water and the cove they are on had abundant alligators. Might have to come back for those.

Beautiful small park on the Bayou. Each campsite had its own fishing pier. Such fun watching our Alligator friends swimming in the river. It is remote. No cell service.

Such a great state park to visit in Louisiana! We stayed here for a short weekend. The state park rents out small fishing boats, kayaks, and canoes. We brought and launched our own boat, which we were able to park at the cabins personal dock. We enjoyed riding our bikes as well. The cabin was filled with everything that we needed, including a coffee pot and bbq pit. Must visit this beautiful park!

Beautiful park with large level RV sites. The staff is incredibly friendly and helpful here. There isn't much for trees between the sites but the size of your "backyard" makes up for it. Great water pressure, no issues with the 30amp electricity and the dump station is close enough to make it easy. The laundry facilities were sufficient and cheap but everything looked a bit rusty and could use an upgrade. Both this and the complete lack of ANY cellular signal dropped the rating to 4 stars for us. The long nature trails were being repaired as we stayed and they were coming along beautifully. Highly recommend this place if your looking to disconnect with technology and reconnect with nature!
