Great camping experience. I came here as a young child so bringing my family back was great. I wish more was open from the hurricane last year but that’s okay. The family campground is decent but can get very loud at night. I’d rather be somewhere more secluded. The backpacking trails are on a short loop and barely would be considered backpacking to me. Also waterfront. Might be a better option in future.

The lake is absolutely beautiful and the view is amazing. There's plenty of space for umbrellas and the area is very clean. The parking is convenient as well. However, the restrooms could use a bit of maintenance. Other than that, everything was perfect

We enjoyed our stay at Lake James State Park campground. The beach is near by and had lots of parking space available. It was a very clean either the beach itself and even the restrooms. They have outdoor shower and changing rooms inside the restrooms. Options to buy ice cream and other stuffs. Even the campsites are clean, we enjoyed our s’mores, grill and the tent site have shades as there are lots of tress, even for hammocks. The campground restrooms were clean only issue we had was there was a garden snake at the ladies restroom door close hole as the doors would not be closed completely. The camp host called the park ranger and put tape on it. Next day park ranger came and opened the tape to let the snake go its way. Overall enjoyed our stay.

The park needs repairs on the road. The campsites are very small. We stayed in tent sites 12 and 13. The footprint for the tent is 12×12, so carry a big tent and has a four-foot drop on one site. You have to set the tent facing the woods and not the lake if it is q2x12. The site is heavily sloped with no level space for cooking or chairs. Even the provided table is slanted to the point things slide off. Before and on you say anything. The first rule of picking a site is semi-flat, well-draining, and big enough for what you need. These sites are not that. Then there is the poor design of the steps from the parking area to the path. The person has never studied hydrology or erosion control. The timbers have had the soil washed out from behind them because of the direction of the water flow. It is easier and safer to walk down next to the steps even with the steep angle. The location is pretty, but it is close to the freeway and you can hear trucks all the time. The fishing is sub-par. The scopes showed very few fish and you can't eat them any you catch due to mercury. There are also deadfall trunks all around the site where storms have topped them and the remaining section is rotting just waiting to fall. The pictures on the website are misleading as to what the sites look like. We made the best of it and still had a good time. I would not recommend the tent sites to anyone. Even the group of very nice young people next to us were laughing about things sliding downhill and needing to be careful how you set your chair.

My wife and I and our dog Squirt did about little hike called "Discover" out to a bridge which crosses over water actually near the entrance way to the park. Fairly well marked and maintained trail geared towards kids - with informative signs along the trail. The bridge is pretty cool. It was a short, easy hike but fun! 👍👍👍👍
