Lake Park Campground & Cottages
Overview
Lake Park Campground & Cottages offers a unique blend of scenic serenity and urban convenience. Situated on the western edge of Rapid City, this park provides a shaded retreat under a canopy of mature trees that shield travelers from the South Dakota sun. Unlike dusty roadside stops, this location emphasizes a park-like atmosphere and genuine hospitality that makes it feel like a destination rather than just a place to park for the night. It is widely regarded as one of the most peaceful places to stay while remaining close to the heart of the action.
Location & Surroundings
The property is ideally positioned adjacent to the beautiful Canyon Lake Park and the flowing waters of Rapid Creek. Guests enjoy immediate access to miles of paved walking and biking trails that wind through the city’s expansive greenway system. Because it sits at the gateway to the Black Hills National Forest, travelers can transition from city amenities to mountain wilderness in a matter of minutes. The surrounding area is lush and vibrant, offering a cool, creekside environment that is rare for high-plains camping.
Amenities & Park Features
The park accommodates a variety of rigs with full hookup RV sites, including several spacious pull-thru options for larger setups and back-in sites nestled among the trees. Those traveling with friends or family who do not own an RV will appreciate the on-site cottages, which range from cozy cabins to multi-bedroom units. Practical features include clean bathhouses, modern laundry facilities, and reliable Wi-Fi for staying connected. The park is also pet-friendly and offers bicycle rentals, allowing guests to explore the local trails without ever needing to unhook their tow vehicle.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
This location serves as an excellent basecamp for exploring South Dakota’s most iconic landmarks. Mount Rushmore National Memorial and the Crazy Horse Memorial are both within a short, scenic drive. Nature lovers can easily spend days exploring the granite spires and wildlife loops of Custer State Park. Families often enjoy visiting nearby Storybook Island or the famous Reptile Gardens. For those looking for local culture, downtown Rapid City offers diverse dining, boutique shopping, and the famous City of Presidents bronze statues.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is an ideal choice for active families and couples who want a quiet, natural setting without sacrificing proximity to modern conveniences like grocery stores and local breweries. It is particularly well-suited for travelers who enjoy cycling and hiking right from their doorstep. If you prefer a basecamp that feels like a backyard garden rather than a parking lot, this is the perfect spot for your Black Hills adventure. It strikes a perfect balance for those who want to see the sights by day and return to a tranquil environment by night.

Close to national attractions. Clean and friendly. Shower slightly awkward to use. (Fold down seat in shower was clever but hard to get dressed standing in stall with wet floor.) All hookups worked well and were convenient. It was a little pricey ( but we did book short notice on a holiday weekend). Glad we found somewhere to camp at all.

We stayed one night in 25ft RV and had a great experience. The reservation system was easy to use, and the park itself is lovely with plenty of mature trees. The water pressure in the showers was amazing, and everything was clean and beautiful. The only drawback is that it’s a bit tight for larger campers, but definitely doable. Overall, a wonderful stay!

I am really happy with my 8 days trip to this location. This camp is well maintained and all the ammenties are open late or 24 hrs. The tent sites have room for your vehicle and a large tent which is rare amd they have large trees for shade at tent sites. The e washrooms are exceptionally clean so you won't be afraid to shower. The location is tucked away far enough off the highway to feel woodsy and quiet but the city centre is a short drive away. The staff are friendly and accommodating and I can't say enough good things about my stay here. Free coffee is a bonus!

Great accommodations! Very clean comfy and cosy! Well stocked dishes, towels. Bed was comfortable. On motorcycles so the paved road and parking spaces are great! Would definitely recommend this place!

Clean well appointed cabins. Motorcycle friendly. On site laundromat. Staff very helpful. Close to Sturgis and many scenic motorcycle rides like spearfish canyon, badlands, needles highway, to mention a few. Would definitely recommend.

This is my favorite place to stay to visit South Dakota so far. I have stayed with them 2 years in a row and have met great people staying onsite. The staff are pleasant and helpful. It’s location just on the west edge of Rapid City makes it so easy to access all of the area parks from the Badlands and west to Devil’s Tower. They have accommodation options and everything needed to cook and grill. They are within walking distance of a lake and walking paths. Pleasant, clean, quiet and I will be back! Don’t forget to say “Hi” to Scott!

We had a great stay at Lake Park Campground & Cottages! We would choose to stay here again. Impressively clean! We enjoyed daily coffee at the shaded picnic table and outdoor seating. The kids played in the shaded driveway and it was nice for our vehicle to have full shade in our own parking space too. We enjoyed walking to feed the ducks and paddle boat at Canyon Lake. It was an easy drive to many area attractions in and outside of Rapid City, especially Mount Rushmore, but other towns and landmarks as well.

My family just spent the last six days staying in the two-bedroom cabin at Lake Park Campground. It was perfect for our family of four. The beds were comfortable, the kitchen, fridge and stove allowed us to prepare meals (we didn't use the grill outside but would have if we weren't touring so much). We appreciated the TV with cable, the "living room area" and the covered porch area where my wife sat out and had her coffee each morning. This spot was perfect for day trips to Custer State Park, The Mammoth Site, Mount Rushmore, Deadwood and so many others. The only minor issue we experienced was that we came during an unprecedented heat wave, and there's one air conditioner for the whole unit. They do provide fans, but this meant we couldn't close doors at night without rooms getting warm. All pretty minor and not something that would matter during normal seasonal temps. We'd definitely recommend this place. It is very affordable and provides plenty of room for your family.
