Lake Poinsett Recreation Area

Overview

Lake Poinsett Recreation Area serves as a centerpiece for outdoor recreation in eastern South Dakota. As one of the largest lakes in the state, this destination provides a vast expanse of water that draws travelers looking for a classic prairie lake experience. The park is characterized by its wide-open views and its connection to the region's history, having been named after Joel Poinsett. Whether you are arriving for a weekend or an extended stay, the park offers a **well-maintained environment** that balances natural beauty with modern convenience for campers of all types.

Location & Surroundings

Situated near Arlington and Brookings, the park sits on the shores of a lake spanning nearly 8,000 acres. The surrounding landscape is a quintessential South Dakota mixture of rolling grasslands and agricultural vistas. The recreation area is split into different sections, including the **Main Unit and the South Unit**, allowing visitors to choose between more active hubs or slightly quieter pockets of the shoreline. The expansive prairie sky and the gentle lap of waves against the sandy banks create a peaceful atmosphere that makes the park feel like a true **lakeside retreat**.

Amenities & Park Features

The park is well-equipped for RV travelers, offering numerous sites with **30 and 50-amp electrical hookups**. Visitors have access to clean, modern restrooms and pressurized showers, along with a conveniently located dump station. To help you enjoy the water and the grounds, the facility provides several specific features:

  • Multiple **paved boat ramps** and docks for easy lake access.
  • Dedicated sandy swim beaches and large playground areas.
  • An 18-hole disc golf course and sheltered picnic spots.
  • The Lake Poinsett Visitor Center featuring historical museum exhibits.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Water sports are the primary draw here, with excellent conditions for **walleye and perch fishing**, as well as tubing, kayaking, and sailing. On land, the Tetonkaha Trail offers a scenic path for hikers and birdwatchers to explore the local flora and fauna. Just a short drive away, the city of Brookings offers cultural stops like the **McCrory Gardens** and the South Dakota Art Museum. These nearby urban amenities provide a great contrast to the rustic, water-focused activities available within the park boundaries.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is an ideal match for **active families and anglers** who want to be steps away from the water. It is a fantastic choice for RVers who travel with boats or kayaks and enjoy a social, vibrant campground atmosphere during the peak summer season. While it offers peaceful sunsets, the vibe is geared toward those who enjoy recreational activity. It is also a great fit for travelers exploring the **I-29 corridor** who want a high-quality natural stopover with full modern amenities rather than a simple roadside park.

Went twice this summer. Good vibes, clean bathrooms, and loved having lake front views.

Wonderful state park! Beautiful, well-maintained hiking trails. I biked them on an unseasonably warm March day. Also played disc golf on the 9 hole course. Absolutely spectacular.

Beautifully maintained state park with gorgeous flowerbeds, grass and trees. Camp Sites have good shade. Park is very clean. There is a very nice, large marina. Beach is accessible, but very rocky. Wear shoes. Lake is quite large.

Love this campground! Gorgeous, spacious, beautiful sunsets, nice people and excellent swimming beach! We stayed at five campgrounds as we traveled north last week. This was BY FAR the best! This is an awesome campground! The women's showers could use a good deep cleansing. But, otherwise this campground checks ALL the boxes! We will for sure be back! FYI - we were driving a one-ton truck pulling a 45 foot fifth wheel toy hauler.

Good for quick visit, camping, boating and fishing! Only about 30 minutes ride from Brookings you can do bunch of activities that is applicable to the whole family in Lake Poinsett. There’s playground for kids and you can just swim on the lake. There are restrooms on many spots. Also good for picnic and barbecue! There’s also fantastic disc golf spots, beach-volleyball court for some extra fun. Check the state park website for camping availability.
