Lake Roosevelt NRA/Fort Spokane

Overview

Fort Spokane at Lake Roosevelt National Recreation Area offers a unique blend of historical significance and waterfront recreation. Located at the confluence of the Columbia and Spokane Rivers, this NPS-managed site provides a peaceful setting for RVers who appreciate natural beauty and cultural heritage. The campground is situated amidst towering Ponderosa pines and open meadows, offering a classic Pacific Northwest camping experience that feels both expansive and intimate for travelers visiting the region.

Location & Surroundings

Situated roughly 25 miles north of Davenport, WA, the park is defined by its proximity to the vast Lake Roosevelt reservoir. The surrounding landscape features rugged basalt cliffs and rolling hills typical of the Inland Northwest. Visitors will find themselves surrounded by the quietude of the Coulee Corridor Scenic Byway, far from the noise of major interstates, making it an ideal spot for those seeking a tranquil retreat near the water's edge and high desert scenery.

Amenities & Park Features

As a National Park Service facility, the amenities focus on providing a high-quality natural experience rather than urban luxuries. The campground features spacious paved parking pads suitable for various RV sizes, though it is important to note there are no hookups available. You will find seasonal potable water, accessible vault toilets, and a dedicated boat launch for easy water access. Each site includes a fire ring and picnic table, encouraging traditional outdoor living and evening stargazing under clear skies.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The primary draw is the historic Fort Spokane Visitor Center, housed in one of the original military buildings. Here, travelers can learn about the site's history as a frontier outpost and an Indian boarding school. Water enthusiasts can enjoy excellent fishing for walleye or explore the shoreline by boat. Additionally, the Sentinel Trail provides a moderate hike with sweeping views of the river confluence, offering excellent opportunities for bird-watching and photography of the local wildlife.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for self-contained RV travelers who enjoy dry camping in scenic, historical environments. It is a fantastic choice for history buffs or families seeking an educational trip focused on the heritage of the West. If you prefer a rustic, quiet atmosphere over the amenities of a modern resort, Fort Spokane provides the perfect base for exploring the unique geology and the deep cultural history of Eastern Washington.

Quiet almost lonely remnants of a fort and boarding school. Thoughtful narratives of troubled times. Lovely view, plenty of parking, and hiking trails. Clean bathrooms, too.

Beautiful and well maintained. Many campsites, some too close together. $10 dump fee, but dump closed.

A very well-kept historic sight with a nice gravel walking trail around the grounds. There are numerous informative signs and displays along the trail. The optiomal hike up the bluff is challenging in places but worth the spectacular views of the lake and the valley.

I pass this historic place when I’m going through to visit my grandparents. Very nicely kept and don’t listen to the people leaving reviews about the camp ground on this site because it’s not the same. It’s the trails and historical buildings NOT the Fort Spokane Campground.

I love historical sites. I love riding my motorcycle. Covid shut it all down. But I'll be back (just like Arnold 😝)
