Lake Roosevelt NRA/Spring Canyon
Overview
Spring Canyon serves as a primary gateway to the sprawling Lake Roosevelt National Recreation Area. It offers a scenic camping experience perched just above the vast reservoir. Unlike commercial RV resorts, this is a federally managed site that focuses on natural beauty and direct access to the upper Columbia River. Travelers find a well-maintained space that balances the rugged Washington landscape with essential park services and clean facilities.
Location & Surroundings
Situated just a few miles east of Coulee Dam, Washington, the park sits within a vibrant high desert environment characterized by golden hills and aromatic sagebrush. The campground is thoughtfully terraced, providing many sites with expansive views of the sparkling blue water below. The surrounding Coulee Corridor offers a dramatic geological backdrop of basalt cliffs and vast plateaus that tell the fascinating story of ancient glacial floods.
Amenities & Park Features
While the campground offers a more rustic experience, it provides essential comforts including flush toilets and seasonal potable water. There are no electric or water hookups available at the sites, making it ideal for self-contained RVs and van lifers. The facility includes a convenient multi-lane boat launch, a designated swimming area with a sandy beach, and several shaded picnic spots. Large paved pads help accommodate various rig sizes, though some sites may require leveling blocks.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The most prominent neighbor is the massive Grand Coulee Dam, where visitors can explore the visitor center or watch the seasonal evening laser light show. Water enthusiasts enjoy world-class fishing for walleye and rainbow trout right from the shoreline or by boat. For those preferring land-based activities, the Bunchgrass Prairie Nature Trail offers a short, educational hike through the unique local ecosystem with stunning panoramic views of the water and the surrounding plateau.
Who This Park Is Best For
This location is a perfect match for boaters and anglers who want quick, easy access to the water's edge. It is also well-suited for dry-camping enthusiasts who prioritize scenic vistas and quiet, star-filled evenings over commercial resort-style amenities. Families will particularly appreciate the dedicated swimming beach and the proximity to regional history, making it a solid choice for a multi-day outdoor adventure in Eastern Washington.

Spectacular, great park and campground. I was just there 6.8 2020 and the campground and park are gated closed,no sign if when to open. There is plenty if beach around so you can still enjoy the area. This is the Keller Ferry area just outside the park

Fort Spokane campground sites are very open with little privacy--no shrubs, few trees. Our site had only 2 ponderosa pines, far apart. But if you're mainly on your boat or kayak all day, no big deal. Good roads for kids to bike and stay nearby. Walk-down paddle launch and 2 docks at campground, which were good. Very steep walk down, however, when water level is low, which would be difficult or impossible for people with mobility issues. Too bad there isn't a better beach for swimming, playing in sand. Too rocky here. But if you head up the Spokane River there are plenty of primitive sandy beaches, when water level is low enough; same with the lake, though you will need to motor further north.

An impressive sight to see. I was surprised the tours were free and there is a laser light show on the dam every night which was pretty cool as well. There is a large and very nice picnic area at the base of the dam as well which is a good place to BBQ and let the kids run.

Nice running or walking trail and very scenic. Lots of public park areas. I hear there's a cool laser show shown on the wall of the dam during the summer and on the 4th of July!

I mean it's the biggest dam in the world. I mean damn it's big. It's a damned fine structure. It's a damn nice park. I mean damn you should really visit this place.
