Lake Sylvia

Overview

Lake Sylvia State Park offers a serene escape into the lush greenery of Western Washington, providing a peaceful sanctuary for weary travelers. Situated on the historic site of a former logging camp, this destination expertly blends cultural significance with immense natural beauty. Visitors are greeted by a peaceful lakeside setting surrounded by towering evergreens and dense ferns, providing a quintessential Pacific Northwest experience for those traveling by RV.

Location & Surroundings

Tucked just outside the town of Montesano, the park serves as a majestic gateway to the Olympic Peninsula and the Washington coast. The terrain is defined by a massive 15,000-foot freshwater shoreline and the Sylvia Creek Forestry Trail, which winds through a deep, vibrant forest canopy. The area feels delightfully secluded and remote, yet it remains easily accessible from Highway 12, making it a highly convenient stop for explorers.

Amenities & Park Features

The park provides dedicated spaces for campers, including sites equipped with partial hookups that offer essential water and electricity services. On-site facilities are well-maintained and include:

  • A convenient RV dump station for guest use
  • Restrooms with hot showers and ADA accessibility
  • A non-motorized boat launch for kayaks and canoes

Outdoor enthusiasts will find the facilities clean and functional, designed to support a comfortable stay within a rugged environment.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Anglers frequent the lake for its excellent trout fishing opportunities throughout the season, while hikers can enjoy five miles of shaded trails. For those looking to venture into town, the historic streets of Montesano offer unique architecture and local shops. The park is also positioned near the Chehalis River, a renowned spot for seasonal salmon fishing and observing local wildlife in their natural habitat.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is an ideal match for travelers seeking a rustic forest retreat rather than a busy, modern resort experience. It is a fantastic choice for families looking to disconnect from digital distractions and enjoy traditional camping activities like swimming or bird watching. Because site lengths vary, it is best suited for small to mid-sized RVs and individuals who truly appreciate a quiet, nature-focused environment.

Beautiful state park with lots of hiking trails. The main trail was closed but the 3 mile trail around the lake was gorgeous. Creek crossings, covered bridges, awesome views and a cool pavilion 😍

This is a very pretty location. Kind of surprising because it is so close to town, but doesn't feel that way. No town noise at all. We were only here to check it out and take a short hike in the fall. I bet in the summer it is gorgeous, but, like so many small lakes, in the fall they lower the lake level. We booked a weekend in June to camp!

Perfect weekend for camping. Had a morning hike all to my self and caught the sunrise between the clouds on the ridge.

This park is pretty nice, the only reason I gave 4 stars is because the sites dont offer much privacy. There is a really nice hiking trail attached to the campgrounds that has a lovely stream running alongside it and many mushrooms! The bathroom is nice and clean. The Lake is also really nice for a swim and kayaking etc. The showers at the lake are free and really hot! We also ate at the local Burger spot Genes Stop and Go Burgers and they were very good and its so cute!

I was supposed to be able to fish at a lake and at my camping spot. This lake is known for lakeside camping and that is why I was charged over $140 for 3 days of camping. But instead of the five feet they said they drained the lake. It was more like fifteen feet they drained it. Not only at the camping spots but even at the day use area. You can walk across and see the bottom. There is no fish in the lake anymore. There is no lake anymore. More like a 3 foot deep duck pond. Than it rained on us half the time we were there but there was a burn ban in effect the whole trip. I live in grays harbor and it had been sprinkling off and on for over a week before the trip and the ground would have puddles from the mist. So I am not sure why they say a person can't have a camp fire when it is wet and raining. I tried to make it work but truth is it was a waste of time and waste of money. I spent over a hundred dollars on fishing licenses and gear for this camping trip. Just to get to a drained lake with no fish and told I can't have a campfire in the rain. It was so bad we left a day early.

People have been recreating at this lake for over 100 years. I loved learning about the history of the area while hiking along the river.
