Lakehead Boat Basin & RV Parking

Overview

Lakehead Boat Basin & RV Parking offers a truly unique experience by blending a working marina with convenient RV accommodations. Located in the heart of Duluth’s vibrant Canal Park district, this facility provides a front-row seat to the maritime activity of Lake Superior. Visitors enjoy watching massive lakers and saltwater vessels pass through the harbor, making it a favorite for those who appreciate the industrial beauty of a Great Lakes port. The atmosphere is bustling yet organized, reflecting its dual purpose as a full-service marina and a premier urban RV destination.

Location & Surroundings

The park is situated on the Park Point peninsula, just a short walk from the iconic Aerial Lift Bridge. This prime location puts guests within reach of sandy beaches on one side and the active harbor on the other. The surrounding landscape is defined by the expansive blue waters of Lake Superior and the charming, walkable streets of Duluth. Staying here means you are steps away from the Duluth Lakewalk, a paved trail that stretches for miles along the scenic shoreline, offering breathtaking views at every turn.

Amenities & Park Features

While the layout is functional and paved to accommodate large vehicles, the park provides essential comforts for a smooth stay. Guests have access to full hookup sites including water, sewer, and electricity options for 30 or 50 amps. On-site facilities include clean restrooms, private showers, and laundry equipment, which are vital for long-term travelers. The presence of the marina means there is a distinct nautical vibe, and the availability of reliable Wi-Fi helps travelers stay connected while they watch the ships roll in.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The immediate area is packed with Duluth’s most popular sites. You can tour the SS William A. Irvin, a retired lake freighter, or explore the impressive maritime exhibits at the Great Lakes Aquarium. Foodies and shoppers will love the variety of local boutiques and breweries scattered throughout Canal Park. For a bit of nature, a short drive or bike ride down Park Point leads to quiet pine forests and some of the best freshwater beaches in the country.

Who This Park Is Best For

This location is ideal for active urban explorers who want to be in the center of the action rather than tucked away in the woods. It is perfect for boat enthusiasts and photographers who want unparalleled access to maritime traffic. Because of its big-rig friendly layout and proximity to city amenities, it also serves as an excellent base camp for those planning to trek further north along the rugged and beautiful North Shore Scenic Drive.

We have been coming here for over 20 years to attend the Duluth Kennel Club Dog Show. It feels like home! We are always happy to see the owners Joel and Jodi. Great location to all things Duluth!

We have been here numerous times. The staff is phenomenal!! Having the hotel near is very helpful to have the facilities of showers and bathrooms so close and clean. We love coming here!! AWESOME place!!

Had a great stay with our RV at the basin. Very interesting place to “camp” (water & electricity hookups) in the heart of the harbor. Facility is very clean and well maintained. Excellent shower and laundry facilities. Can easily walk to the arial lift bridge.

I almost don't want to tell you about them so I can keep this hidden gem to myself!!! Except Jodi and her family are so lovely I want all the people to give them all the business!!! We've come here enough that our kids have built a comfort in being at the marina and that in and of itself is worth it. Bathroom and laundry and the Fairfield Inn, dumpster for the garbage, all I have to do is park and enjoy my time?!? #Perfection Updated, 2025: shower and laundry now are available 7a-7p. Otherwise, my original review stands and we are more in love with this place than we were the first time. :)

We had the best stay at Lakehead Boat Basin! The owners Joel and Jodi were so friendly and accommodating and Tony was incredibly helpful! We've been dealing with a lot of plumbing issues and everyone had such great advice and were really able to help us out. The location is perfect to Downtown Duluth and we enjoyed walking over the aerial bridge. It is a unique experience watching it lift! Yes, the RV park is in a parking lot, but it made for a unique camping experience and didn't make a difference for us. The spaces are wide, but larger RVs may have more of a challenge backing in (we have a 30ft. Class C Motorhome with no tow vehicle and didn't have any problems). The bathrooms, showers and laundry facilities are maintained by the hotel and are extremely nice and clean. We met a lot of friendly people while staying here and found out that many people stay here year after year. I highly suggest booking a stay here!

Camped here in a motorhome. Great views of the city with ore ships coming and going. We have been staying here for several years and are booked for next year. Owners are very accommodating and friendly.

We stayed the night and booked a water and electric RV site and the host upgraded us to a full hookup site at no additional charge. RV office has some supplies if you forgot something. Shower, WiFi are included. Laundry room is available if needed. I would recommend if you are staying in the Duluth area, easy walk to downtown area restaurants and the views are amazing.

We LOVE staying at Lakehead Boat Basin with our RV, stayed several times, and have always loved the view and the convenience to all of the fun activities only blocks away. The owners are so kind and always try their best to accommodate even in last minute changes. Highly recommend!!

Camping here was recommended by another camper we met on our way back from Glacier. Frankly I’d avoid the place. We hauled our 5th wheel here only to be assigned a site what we couldn’t get into. They had pulled a big 45’ boat out and parked the boat lift right in the way. We ended up getting our money back and drove to a more traditional camp ground. The boat basin is in great location right downtown and a close drive to the beach but the campground is just all pavement so you are camping on a parking lot. If you don’t mid that and have a smaller right then it might work for a night or two. The two red stripes are the camping in the attached photo.
