Lassen/Bogard

Overview

Lassen/Bogard is a serene Forest Service destination nestled within the Lassen National Forest. Located at an elevation of approximately 5,600 feet, this destination offers a peaceful retreat among towering pine trees and fresh mountain air. Unlike high-traffic commercial resorts, this location focuses on providing a traditional camping experience where the sounds of nature take center stage. It serves as an excellent base camp for those looking to explore the rugged beauty of Northern California's volcanic landscapes.

Location & Surroundings

Situated about 25 miles northwest of Susanville, CA, the campground is conveniently located off Highway 44. The surrounding landscape is characterized by dense forests of Ponderosa pine and fir, creating a cool canopy during the summer months. Its proximity to the Lassen Volcanic National Park entrance makes it a strategic stop for travelers heading into the park. The area is defined by its volcanic geology and quiet, expansive forest vistas that offer a true sense of seclusion from the modern world.

Amenities & Park Features

This is a rustic, dry-camping facility that caters to those who prefer a self-contained lifestyle. While there are no electrical or water hookups, guests have access to potable water and clean vault toilets. Each site typically features a picnic table and a heavy-duty fire ring, perfect for evening gatherings under the stars. The sites are generally spacious enough for medium-sized RVs and trailers, though larger rigs should navigate with care through the forested loops to ensure a proper fit.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The primary draw is the short drive to Lassen Volcanic National Park, where visitors can hike to Cinder Cone or explore the bubbling thermal features of Bumpass Hell. Anglers and boaters will appreciate the proximity to Eagle Lake, known for its unique trout species and remarkably clear waters. For a subterranean adventure, the Subway Cave lava tube is just a short trip away, offering a unique glimpse into the region’s volcanic past via a self-guided walk through a natural basalt tunnel.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for adventurous boondockers and nature photographers who prioritize scenery and silence over luxury amenities. It is a fantastic choice for families looking to unplug and reconnect in a forest setting without the distractions of modern technology. If you are a traveler seeking a quiet home base for exploring the volcanic wilderness or simply need a cool, shaded spot to rest during a long Northern California road trip, this campground fits the bill perfectly.

Great place to stop and stretch your legs, and let the kids burn off some energy. Restrooms were clean and easy to change the boys, even the 10yr old. Got to keep seats dry incase they fall asleep 😴

Great rest area super clean. Do not break any traffic laws in this area though!

Lots of adorable chipmunks around the rest area! The signs say not to feed the wildlife because it makes them dependent on humans. I'm not sure if that's true.

One of the only stops on the way to Reno. Stop here for the bathroom and it has a pet area. Restroom is heated during the winter so its awesome! Great place to stretch, always clean.

This place is very pretty, but had no cell service . Was a good place to stop and walk around for my 30 minute break.

Update on 10 June 2021. Once again stopped at the Bogard Rest Area. It was very clean and well maintained. It is a good place to have a picnic and you and your pets strch your legs. Easy of and on the Hwy. It is always a good stop to stretch your legs and empty your bladder. It is always clean.

Always clean and well cared for, and compared to other rest areas I've been to up and down the West Coast it surprisingly had a nice picnic area as well as a nice size pet area to take your fur babies to 2hen 4heyve been couped up in the car for a long ride.. not to mention a Pretty nice place to let the kiddos run around fora bit to get a little energy out. Actually one of the best we've been to by far...

Spent a night there. I was the only one there. The road in to the south is better. Don't let Google maps take you on the north entrance by the rest stop unless you have a sturdy car.

Beautiful rest area! Really clean, very organized and easy to get on and off the highway to use. It is in a high mountain setting and had snow on the ground when we visited mid April, but the weather was fantastic and the grounds are very well maintained.
