Overview

Laura S. Walker State Park is a peaceful retreat named after a prominent Georgia conservationist. Nestled on the northern edge of the legendary Okefenokee Swamp, this destination offers a lush, wooded environment for travelers looking to reconnect with nature. The park balances outdoor recreation with relaxation, providing a gateway to one of Georgia's most unique ecosystems. The park is known for its well-maintained facilities and hospitable staff, ensuring a pleasant visit. Visitors often comment on the quiet atmosphere and the diverse wildlife that calls this protected area home.

Location & Surroundings

Situated just outside of Waycross, GA, the park is defined by its proximity to the Okefenokee Swamp. The landscape features towering pines draped in Spanish moss and the dark, tea-colored waters typical of the region. Because it is located in Southeast Georgia, the park enjoys mild winters, making it a popular year-round destination for those heading south or exploring the coastal plain. The local ecosystem is a haven for biodiversity, offering a distinct experience from typical pine forests, with stunning views of the surrounding wetlands.

Amenities & Park Features

The park features well-maintained RV sites equipped with electrical and water hookups, along with several pull-through options for larger rigs. One of the standout features is The Lakes Golf Course, an 18-hole championship course located right on-site. For those who prefer the water, there is a large boardwalk spanning a portion of the lake, offering excellent views of alligators and birds. Clean bathhouses and laundry facilities ensure a comfortable stay for long-term travelers, while playgrounds and a swimming pool provide options for recreation.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The primary draw for many is the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge, located just a short drive away. Here, visitors can take guided boat tours or rent canoes to explore the vast swamp interior. Closer to camp, the park offers nature trails that wind through diverse habitats, including the Big Creek Nature Trail. Fishing enthusiasts frequently visit the lake for largemouth bass and bream, while birdwatchers can spot egrets, herons, and wood storks in their natural habitat.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for nature lovers and photographers who want easy access to the unique flora and fauna of South Georgia. It is a fantastic choice for golfing enthusiasts who want the convenience of a course within walking distance of their campsite. While it provides enough activity for families, its quiet and spacious layout makes it particularly appealing to retirees and couples seeking a tranquil, scenic stopover. It is the perfect spot for those who appreciate rustic beauty without sacrificing essential comforts.

Great park with plenty to do! Everything was good on our visit. We went hiking on the trails and also did kayaking, both were a great experience. The park has a lot of amenities (worth looking them up if you’re planning a visit). Overall, it’s a beautiful spot to enjoy the outdoors.

Love our Memorial weekend at the park. Site 1 was big and level. The evening sun was brutal but still a good spot. Bathhouse clean but do need a refresh. All employees and camp host friendly and accommodating.

We loved the park! The kids had fun on the playground. Plenty of places to ride bikes. Everything in walking distance. We enjoyed Ranger Shannon's class on walking sticks and his archery lesson. We're looking forward to returning in the summer to enjoy the swimming area and boating on the lake.

The place is serene I should say . Had a wonderful weekend with my husband .Beautiful lake and very nice staff specially the man at the reception. The bathroom is clean as well . Except for the gravel that is disappointing and painful . Setting up our tent on the gravel is not a good idea . I still give a 5 star because of the good man in the reception .❤️

I had a perfect weekend here! The host and staff were very friendly and attentive, making me feel truly welcomed. We booked campsite No. 12 by the water, and everything was just perfect—especially waking up to a beautiful lake view in the morning. The campsite was quiet at night, and there was plenty of privacy between sites. I really enjoyed my stay and would love to come back again!

This is another very nice Georgia state park full of amenities for daily and overnight visitors. The lake is small but pretty with two boat launches and a place to rent kayaks. There are a couple good playgrounds, pavilions for large gatherings and even an exercise station with various pieces of equipment. The campground has 60 sites that range from good to excellent. If you are fortunate enough to get one by the water you'll be treated to gorgeous sunsets and sunrises. There are also cabins available for rent. The staff are very friendly and helpful. This is definitely a place to stay if you want some peaceful, quiet days in the woods!
