Lewis & Clark/Mortimer Gulch

Overview

Located on the eastern edge of the Rocky Mountain Front, Lewis & Clark/Mortimer Gulch offers a quintessential Montana wilderness experience. Situated near the base of the majestic Gibson Dam, this Forest Service campground serves as a primary gateway to the massive Bob Marshall Wilderness. It is a place where the mountains meet the plains, providing a rugged backdrop for those looking to disconnect from modern distractions and reconnect with the raw beauty of the Treasure State.

Location & Surroundings

The park is positioned roughly 20 miles west of the small town of Augusta, Montana, following the scenic Sun River Canyon. The drive leading to the site is an attraction in itself, offering dramatic views of limestone cliffs and the rushing Sun River. The campground is split into two sections: Lewis & Clark and Mortimer Gulch, both of which provide immediate access to the Gibson Reservoir. The surrounding terrain is characterized by steep ridges and dense forests, creating a deeply secluded atmosphere for visitors.

Amenities & Park Features

As a rustic Forest Service site, the focus here is on the essentials for dry camping. The facilities are designed to maintain the natural integrity of the canyon while providing necessary comforts for outdoor enthusiasts. Visitors should prepare for a primitive experience without modern hookups.

  • Functional vault toilets located throughout both sections of the park.
  • A hand pump providing potable water for campers during the summer season.
  • Individual sites featuring heavy-duty fire rings and sturdy picnic tables for meals.
  • A convenient boat launch for motorized and non-motorized reservoir access.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The area surrounding the reservoir is an outdoor playground for those who love the rugged Montana landscape. Whether on land or water, there is plenty to explore nearby within the national forest boundaries.

  • Fishing for rainbow and brown trout in the Sun River and the reservoir.
  • Hiking into the Bob Marshall Wilderness via several nearby trailheads.
  • Observing wildlife including bighorn sheep, elk, and grizzly bears in their natural habitat.
  • Exploring the engineering and scenic views at the historic Gibson Dam.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is ideal for dry campers and boondockers who appreciate solitude and mountain vistas over luxury resort amenities. Because the access road can be narrow and gravel-heavy, it is best suited for smaller RVs, truck campers, or adventurous van lifers. It is a dream location for wilderness enthusiasts who want a basecamp that feels truly removed from civilization while remaining accessible to some of the most iconic hiking trails in the United States.

Campground with many large campsites with a fire pit and community bathrooms. A short walk down the road will take you to a mostly level dirt trail around Gibson Reservoir.

Nice views on drive to campground. Camped in Mortimer Gulch campground 2 weekday nights in July 2020. Vault toilets were clean, many sites large and private, and only a few other campers. Quiet. Hiked up Mortimer Gulch trail, many braids and shortcuts from horse users, but did not meet any horses. Decent views.
