Little City Campground

Overview

Nestled within the scenic and quiet woodlands of Higganum, Little City Campground offers a classic New England camping experience for those seeking a peaceful retreat. This family-owned property emphasizes a quiet and relaxed atmosphere, making it a refreshing alternative to larger, more commercialized RV resorts. With a blend of seasonal residents and short-term travelers, the park maintains a friendly community feel where the focus remains on enjoying the natural beauty of the Connecticut countryside. The wooded sites provide a sense of seclusion that is increasingly rare in modern campgrounds, allowing guests to truly immerse themselves in a natural setting.

Location & Surroundings

The campground is situated in the heart of the Lower Connecticut River Valley within Middlesex County, an area celebrated for its rolling hills and dense forests. Higganum provides a secluded setting that feels miles away from the hustle of city life, yet it remains conveniently accessible from major Connecticut travel routes. The surrounding landscape is defined by lush greenery and a canopy of mature trees that provide ample shade and a sense of privacy for each campsite. This natural forest environment ensures that guests can disconnect from the digital world and enjoy the sights and sounds of the local flora and fauna.

Amenities & Park Features

Little City Campground provides essential services designed to ensure a comfortable stay for modern RVers without sacrificing rustic charm. The park features full hookup sites equipped with 30 and 50-amp electrical service, accommodating a variety of trailer and motorhome sizes. On-site facilities include:

  • A refreshing outdoor swimming pool for seasonal recreation.
  • A dedicated playground and basketball court for family fun.
  • Clean, well-maintained bathhouses and on-site laundry rooms.
  • Pet-friendly grounds with shaded areas for walking dogs.

These features provide the practical necessities required for both weekend getaways and extended seasonal stays in the Connecticut woods.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The local area is rich with historical landmarks and outdoor recreation opportunities. Just a short drive away, visitors can explore the medieval-style Gillette Castle State Park or catch a professional theater performance at the renowned Goodspeed Opera House. For nature enthusiasts, the nearby Seven Falls State Park and Devil's Hopyard offer excellent hiking trails and scenic waterfalls. The proximity to the Connecticut River also provides various options for boating, fishing, and sightseeing, including trips on the historic Essex Steam Train and Riverboat located just a few miles down the road.

Who This Park Is Best For

This campground is ideal for travelers who prefer a rustic and traditional camping vibe over a high-activity resort. It is a perfect fit for families looking for a safe, quiet space for children to play outdoors, as well as couples seeking a home base for exploring the historical sites of coastal and central Connecticut. Because of its peaceful environment and deeply shaded lots, it is best suited for those who value privacy, nature, and a slower pace of life while touring the Northeast in their RV.

Absolutely loved this place!!! Everyone is super nice and friendly! Each spot has lots of room, and it's gorgeous out there! We stayed about a month and a half. The owner, Cheryl, even brought our kids toys when we left for them to remember our stay!!

Just wanted to give Cheryl, the owner, a big thank you. I recently had an emergency and she was right there. That's not the first time. She will be there to help no matter what the issue is. Thank you again Cheryl I'm very grateful.

Where to begin. ..This campground had a "deliverance" feel to it right from the beginning. We lasted 3 hours before we packed it all up and found different lodgings. It started with big smiles and happy greetings but quickly turned to being treated with sceptical suspicion (?) before we even unpacked the car she started saying depending on how we behaved things might cost more.(!?!?!) We thought that was strange. There was a child on a leash (We thought that was strange) and an area of the campground that is inhabited by permanent campers and apparently off limits. I drove too fast, although far from speeding (maybe 10-15mph) and accidentally turned into "the field" (the loop with the permanent residents?) and all hell broke loose. We were told that they didn't know how things were done where we were from but here they follow the rules. Oh, yes, did I mention the managers/groundskeepers were drunk. It was creepy. Just for context: There were 8 of us, 3 of which are under 3yo. we set up camp, had dinner , no alcohol, and then 4 of us were on our way out, only 4 were staying ...when me and my 83 yo mother drove too fast in the wrong area....the rest is twilight zone weirdness.

In all my years of camping from one end of North America to the other I have never experienced such a Gestapo campground host(owner?). Every time we entered or exited the CG we were yelled at for breaking rules that were never explained to us when we checked in. Rest rooms and showers were barbaric even by CG standards, dumpsters overflowing with trash and a very small selection of available sites due to permanent residents.
