Location & Surroundings
Tucked away just outside the village of Chama, the park is surrounded by the stunning landscapes of the Carson National Forest. The elevation here sits at approximately 7,800 feet, ensuring cool summer temperatures and vibrant fall foliage. The property is divided by the gentle flow of the Rio Chama, where mature cottonwood trees provide shade for many of the sites. Visitors can expect to see local wildlife and enjoy the sounds of the water while remaining just a short drive from the local grocery stores and charming restaurants found in the heart of town.

- A community pavilion perfect for group gatherings or meeting fellow travelers.
The park also features high-speed Wi-Fi access, making it easier to stay connected while enjoying the rugged beauty of the San Juan Mountains. Fire rings and picnic tables are available to help you make the most of the cool mountain evenings.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The primary draw for many visitors is the historic Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad, a coal-fired steam engine that journeys through spectacular mountain passes. Anglers will appreciate the easy access to trout fishing right on the property or at the nearby El Vado and Heron Lakes. Hikers and nature photographers can explore the Continental Divide Trail or take short drives to witness the dramatic rock formations and alpine meadows that define this region. In the evenings, the dark skies offer incredible opportunities for stargazing away from city lights.
Who This Park Is Best For
This destination is ideal for outdoor enthusiasts and history buffs who want a slower pace of life during their travels. It is a favorite for retirees looking for a seasonal home base and families seeking a traditional camping experience near the water. Every time we've stayed we have had a good time! Fishing is great and the late evening star gazing is amazing! September is the perfect time as the day time temps are moderate and the cool evenings make the campfire a must..

EXCELLENT place to stay with your camper/RV!! Beautiful river runs next to campground, great for a beautiful sunset. Add a fire in the fire pit and it's so nice, beautiful and relaxing!! Campground owners are amazing!!!!

Great place! I was on my way to Angel Fire for a veteran event and needed a place for the night after a long day on the road. Management was very accommodating and LaTrel was wonderful and put me in a site where I would have minimal disturbance with late arrivals. And was given a veteran discount and I didn’t even ask. Thank you. My site was level and the campground was clean and spacious. I would definitely stay here again.

We have stayed here 2 nights and it has to be the quietest campground we have stayed at. Our spot, 25, is on the river, so we slept to the sound of the river. Previous reviews about the owners are completely false and apparently were posted by individuals who couldn't follow the basic rules. The owners are very friendly. The campground is clean and well maintained. Bring your fishing rod if you like trout. Would definitely stay here again.

Clean, level sites. Quiet during the week and exploded with families on the weekend. It was a fun family atmosphere on the weekend. Stayed for a week and enjoyed the centralized location. Pop’s and Nonnie’s shaved ice cart was fantastic(best shaved ice we’ve had).

The ownership at Little Creel is phenomenal. I have stayed here previously on 2 separate times and it was a great experience. This time, I needed to charge our Tesla and I called ahead to request an RV hookup with 50 Amps. Sure enough, Little Creel, was able to provide us with a space to charge up for a reasonable price. Great people and all around a great business! Please book your next stay with them. Be sure to visit their gift shop and support local!

My husband and I stayed at Little Creel in July 2024 for 6 days. Lytrel was extremely pleasant even when we wanted to stay an extra night it was no problem. The park is awesome. With the upgrades the new owners have done it is so beautiful. I'm sure more has to be done to get it done, but all in all we loved it. We will be back. THANK YOU FOR A GREAT WEEK LITTLE CREEL!!!!

I am puzzled by the negative reviews and can only comment that the campground policies are clearly stated in the email I received when I checked in. If you violate the policies you should expect consequences. I found the site to be pleasant and peaceful. Many sites are on the lovely river, they are level and hard gravel. WiFi is great (30mbs) enough to stream Netflix. We did not use facilities but enjoyed our stay and would stop here again.

The Camp Host was very nice and helpful when we first got there. On Sunday when some of our friends were scheduled to check out, she turned into a whole different person. They wanted to stay a couple of hours longer and she was not nice at all. My husband left for a while and when he was coming back in through the entrance she stopped him and grilled him about where the others had gone and why their wives were still sitting at our camp site. She was very unprofessional and rude. We will not be staying here again in the future.
