Los Padres/Los Prietos

Overview

Los Prietos Campground offers a quintessential national forest experience nestled within the Los Padres National Forest. Situated along the scenic Paradise Road, this destination provides a serene escape from the coastal bustle of Santa Barbara. The park is characterized by its sprawling Coast Live Oaks that provide ample shade for campers. It serves as a peaceful retreat for those looking to reconnect with nature while staying within a short drive of city conveniences.

Location & Surroundings

Located just north of Santa Barbara, the campground sits in the upper Santa Ynez Valley. The surroundings are defined by the rugged beauty of the Santa Ynez Mountains and the gentle flow of the nearby Santa Ynez River. Visitors will find themselves immersed in a lush woodland environment where the air is scented with sage and oak. The Paradise Road area is a local favorite for its accessibility and stunning canyon views, offering a stark contrast to the nearby Pacific shoreline.

Amenities & Park Features

This is a rustic camping experience, so visitors should prepare for dry camping without hookups. The sites are well-spaced and feature paved spurs that can accommodate moderate-sized RVs and trailers. Each site is equipped with a heavy-duty picnic table and a fire ring for evening gatherings. While there are no showers, the facility provides well-maintained vault toilets and access to potable water spigots located throughout the loops to ensure a comfortable stay.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty of recreation within reach. The Aliso Trail offers a beautiful loop for hikers and mountain bikers directly from the area. For water lovers, Cachuma Lake is just a short drive away, offering boating and fishing opportunities. Additionally, the famous Red Rock swimming holes provide a refreshing dip during the summer months. Those seeking a bit of culture can easily visit the historic Santa Barbara Mission or the boutiques of downtown Santa Barbara.

Who This Park Is Best For

Los Prietos is ideal for travelers who prefer a natural forest setting over a luxury resort environment. It is a fantastic choice for families looking for a weekend getaway and birdwatchers hoping to spot local species under the oak canopy. If you enjoy boondocking-style camping and want a quiet basecamp for exploring the trails of the Los Padres National Forest, this campground provides the perfect balance of seclusion and accessibility.

We hiked to this campground from ours using the back roads. It is on a steep hill. Some sites high up look more secluded but be careful which you chose to make sure you are not sliding off your bed all night! LOTS of trees so more shade and ability to use a hammock! Some sites are large so you can still use very large tents.

Is ok... No Shower! The ground is slope so make sure to set your tent correctly or you will roll off your blowup bed. Dried up river. There's a water spout but you can't hook up the water hose.

Great campground. Lots of trees for shade during summer and gets you the feel of camping in the woods. Somewhat clean toilets (not honey buckets). Very family friendly.

Stayed on site 28. Good distance between other sites. Plenty of room and dog friendly. They provide bathrooms and running water. I suggest bringing a bucket to fill water to take back to your site. The site has a fire pit and grill. They sell wood too which came in handy. Deer came pretty close to our site and we constantly heard turkeys. There is a hiking trail about half a mile from the campground called Snyder trail. It's 3.6 miles long but the views of the hike are amazing and totally worth it. Definitely suggest the hike while you are there. The hiking trail is also the only place I got reception.

Very sweet little campground. mostly empty in the week, full of wild turkey!

Pros: Shady oaks (at most sites) and wild turkeys wander the campground. Near Cachuma Lake and Santa Ynez River. Some of the sites are nice and roomy. CONS: -Site #13 looks like a massive branch from the oak tree fell off and cracked the table in half. The table hasn't been repaired and the site is small and in full sun. -Site #12 has no spigot (you have to access the spigot smack dab in the middle of Site #13 and it barely functions, the back of Site #11, or across the way...it's a little awkward walking through people's sites). -The bathroom nearest Sites 11, 12 and 13 shares with a couple of other sites and one of the two toilets was out of order. This causes occasional lines. NO SINKS. -The fire pit was halfway full of ash and hadn't been cleaned in between reservations. -Poison oak is part of the natural habitat so keep a lookout. The back side of our site was full of it.
