Los Padres/Upper Oso

Overview

Upper Oso Campground offers a rugged and serene getaway tucked within the Santa Ynez Mountains of the Los Padres National Forest. Located near Santa Barbara, this facility serves as a gateway to the wilderness for those seeking a more traditional outdoor experience. While it is widely recognized as a prime equestrian camp, it remains open to standard RV travelers seeking a quiet retreat. The atmosphere is rustic, encouraging visitors to disconnect and immerse themselves in the natural sights of the canyon.

Location & Surroundings

The campground is situated along Paradise Road, where the landscape is defined by towering oak trees and dramatic mountain peaks. The Los Padres National Forest provides a backdrop of chaparral-covered hills and seasonal creeks. Travelers will appreciate the seclusion provided by the deep canyon setting, which feels worlds away from the coast. This location is particularly famous for its proximity to the Santa Ynez River, offering a refreshing contrast to the arid mountain environment during the wetter months.

Amenities & Park Features

As a primitive forest site, Upper Oso focuses on essential comforts rather than luxury. The park provides the following features:

  • Picnic tables and fire rings at every campsite for outdoor cooking.
  • Vault toilets and shared water spigots located throughout the loops.
  • Equestrian corrals and hitching posts for those traveling with horses.

RVers should arrive prepared with full tanks as there are no hookups available. The campground accommodates trailers and motorhomes of modest lengths, offering a genuine boondocking experience.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Adventure seekers will find plenty of opportunities nearby. The Nineteen Oaks Trail is a popular choice for hikers and mountain bikers, offering views of the valley. A short drive away lies Lake Cachuma, where visitors can enjoy boating and fishing. For those who prefer a taste of civilization, the charming village of Solvang is within reach, offering unique bakeries. The nearby Red Rock area provides scenic pools and additional hiking paths along the riverbed.

Who This Park Is Best For

This campground is ideal for self-contained RVers who enjoy dry camping and prioritize natural scenery over resort-style amenities. It is a premier destination for equestrians, offering specialized facilities difficult to find elsewhere. If you are looking for a basecamp to explore the Santa Ynez Valley’s backcountry, Upper Oso is a perfect fit. It is best suited for travelers who appreciate a primitive camping style and the quiet peacefulness of the national forest.

It is much more isolated than other campgrounds in the area and not along the side of the road. They also have an ATV road at the back of the campsite and a trail. Not sure if you are supposed to walk on the ATV trail but it has really pretty views of the mountains. The toilets were fine, for a campground they were pretty good! It got COLD at night, my car said it was 37 degrees! the stars were INCREDIBLE and I highly recommend going on a night with a new moon!

After we had our breakfast we checked in and up to the room we went. The pictures will show the room but again the staff made the stay even more special. We get off the elevator and there is staff waiting to escort us to the room and help us with our bags. We needed our clothes ironed and the room did not have iron but the staff came and got our clothes and they pressed our outfits and returned the same day. After a very comfortable night’s rest, we were up early to catch our flight and once again the staff was exceptional with easy checkout and a quick ride to the airport by hotel staff. I would highly recommend staying here. Thanks!

I hope they let some water out of the dam. Been going through this area as a kid. 30+ years. Never have seen it so dry. In some of the creek areas there was no water at all. January 2019

Great secluded spot, not many trees on sites but excellent camp hosts. There are many horse, hiking, and ATV trails nearby.

Great camping. Great hiking trails. Very courteous staff and host. Enjoyable scenery all around. Only reason for 4 stars is the bathrooms were a bit gross. 1 of them being locked, meaning almost always having to wait. If you go here, make sure to note there are no showers. We brought a Ozark trail two room shower tent with a portable shower and portable toilet so wasn't as inconvenient for us. Also, lots of ants all over. But hey, that's camping :)

Fire ripped through last year. So it's dry and in some areas burnt. But it's a great place to checkout with trailheads for horses and dirt bikes. Also great place to stay with horses because it has corals. The host name is Bob and he was very helpful and nice. Restrooms need work

Good: The mountain landscape, flush toilets (not too grimy), drinking water, hiking trails BAD: Experience with camp host Bob! He pointed us twice in the wrong direction to set up our tent- the first time he came around AFTER we set up and said that area's reserved (ok we should have known, it had a grill and it's own parking spot). The second time, I asked him where was NOT reserved, and he pointed downhill to a patch of grass without amenities, so we walked down there and set up, he passed by and it seemed fine. The next morning, I went to ask him if we could use a grill to boil water and he said we were lucky not to have gotten a fee overnight- WHAT? He told us the area we camped in was for day use only, and if the ranger had seen, we'd have gotten a ticket... So he chose not to tell us that until the next day? So I asked him where did he want us to go, and he SHRUGGED. I explained that we had gotten two day passes, and he said oh okay, that's fine then... Except that 15 minutes later he came by and yelled "You people are illegally camping, I won't tell you again!"- so I have no idea what his problem was, and why he couldn't be clear with us as to where to go/what he wanted from us. He was so abrupt and talking with him was so frustrating we left immediately rather than struggle to get any kind of help! Ensure you have a reservation so you don't have to deal with Bob!
