Mackinaw/Little Wolf Lake
Overview
Little Wolf Lake State Forest Campground offers a serene, rustic escape within the vast Mackinaw State Forest. This is not a high-end resort with concrete pads; instead, it provides a genuine connection to Northern Michigan's wilderness. Managed by the DNR, the park sits along the shores of Little Wolf Lake, offering a peaceful setting for those looking to unplug and enjoy the rhythmic sounds of the wind through the hardwoods and the water on the shore. It is an authentic back-to-basics experience that emphasizes nature over modern distractions.
Location & Surroundings
Situated just a short drive from the charming village of Lewiston, MI, the park is nestled in an area known for its dense hardwoods and sparkling inland lakes. The surrounding Montmorency County landscape is a haven for wildlife, including white-tailed deer and various migratory bird species. The park’s position on Little Wolf Lake provides immediate access to calm waters, while the proximity to thousands of acres of state land offers endless miles of winding trails for exploration and quiet contemplation deep in the forest.
Amenities & Park Features
This is a rustic campground, meaning visitors should arrive prepared for a true off-grid experience. While there are no electric, water, or sewer hookups for large rigs, the park provides essential facilities including vault toilets and a hand pump for potable water. Each campsite is equipped with a sturdy fire ring and a picnic table to enhance the outdoor living experience. The most significant feature for many visitors is the public boat launch, which allows campers to easily get their kayaks, canoes, or small fishing boats onto the water within minutes of waking up.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The area is a prime destination for fishing, with Little Wolf Lake being well-known for panfish, largemouth bass, and northern pike. Beyond the water, the extensive network of ORV and hiking trails within the Mackinaw State Forest attracts those looking for adventure on land. A short trip into Lewiston allows visitors to explore local diners and specialty shops, or you can visit the nearby Garland Lodge for a round of golf before returning to the quiet seclusion of your lakeside campsite.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is ideal for self-contained RVers and van lifers who appreciate solitude and a primitive camping style. It is a perfect match for outdoor enthusiasts like anglers and paddlers who want direct waterfront access without the crowds or noise of a commercial resort. If you prefer the simple crackle of a campfire and the call of a loon over high-speed internet and modern amenities, this hidden gem in the Michigan woods is designed for your travel style.

This was my view of the lake from our site. The campground was very nice, and the lake is beautiful! We will be returning.

Very nice lake no public Access unless you are at the campgrounds and then there is still no boat launch there.

I must say this was a great campground. This time of the year it was not busy at all. Pretty much had the whole place to ourself. I would have given this campsite 5 stars But the fire pit rings looked to be made from old car or truck rims. Very small. They need to invest in some actual fire pit rings. This would make your fires much nicer. But overall a great place to camp.

Very rustic. We go every August for our annual get together. Would be 5 stars if they would keep the vault toilets clean!

I started my love for camping here in 1961. Over 100 family and friends spent weeks here every summer. I've only returned here a few times in the last 30 years because I live out of state, but it's still my heaven on earth.
