Mackinaw/Pickerel Lake State Forest Campground offers a serene escape into the northern Michigan wilderness. Managed by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, this destination provides a truly rustic experience for travelers who prefer the sights and sounds of nature over the hum of a busy resort. Located on the shores of the crystal-clear Pickerel Lake, the park invites visitors to slow down and enjoy a traditional camping atmosphere under a dense canopy of hardwoods.

Facilities here are designed for simplicity and self-sufficiency. As a state forest campground, it features vault toilets and a hand pump for potable water rather than modern hookups. Each of the 39 sites offers a private feel with plenty of shade. Key features include:

- A convenient designated boat launch for small watercraft.

Outdoor enthusiasts will appreciate the direct access to the High Country Pathway, a premier 80-mile trail system perfect for hiking and mountain biking. The area is also famous for its elk viewing opportunities, as Vanderbilt is known as the Elk Capital of Michigan. For those looking to explore further, the clear waters of the Sturgeon River are nearby, offering excellent conditions for trout fishing and adventurous kayaking trips.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is an ideal choice for off-grid campers and small RV owners who value peace and quiet. It is best suited for those who enjoy dry camping and want to immerse themselves in a primitive forest setting. I've been coming to this campground for some time. Usually early June or late fall.(To avoid the obnoxious partiers). This park is always clean and well kept. Sites are decent sizes. Multiple different types of sites. RV, Campers, and tent sites. There are handicap sites that will handle wheel chairs better(gravel). Always peaceful here. I always recommend these rustic sites.

The bathrooms were clean and maintained well. The rustic campground was exactly what we were looking for. Multiple spacious lots and access to wells.

Great campground, the road in was a little on the rough side and I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a little nervous about getting stuck towing a trailer and all but we did fine in the end. The lake is not much use for fishing from shore but with a canoe or small boat or something there are some fish to be had. That said I certainly understand that there are better fishing opportunities readily available at other spots nearby. It is a very pretty location. Large campground with lots of sizeable spots and it was pretty quiet in the fall when we were there.

Some excellent sites with decent lake access, many decent sites. Boat launch. Seems well-maintained. Road from main drag washboard in spots. Lots of owls heard. Didn't fish, so can't comment

Nice campground. Very rustic. No electricity, running water, etc. The lake is crystal clear, and the lots are a good size.

Awesome place. Maintained very well, with very tidy campsites. Some of them are a little close to each other, but not all. Plenty of hiking, fishing, and kayaking opportunities around.
