Overview

Manchester State Park offers a unique blend of military history and Pacific Northwest natural beauty. Located on the Kitsap Peninsula, this 111-acre park was once a coastal defense installation. Today, it serves as a peaceful retreat where visitors can explore old brick structures while enjoying views of the Puget Sound. The park is characterized by its lush, second-growth forest and its historic torpedo warehouse, providing a backdrop that feels both educational and serene for modern campers.

Location & Surroundings

Situated in Port Orchard, Washington, the park provides a front-row seat to the bustling activity of the Puget Sound. On clear days, campers can enjoy sweeping views of the Seattle skyline across the water. The surroundings are defined by a mix of rocky shorelines and dense evergreen canopies. Its position on the eastern side of the peninsula makes it a prime spot for watching ferries and cargo ships navigate the deep blue waters of the Rich Passage.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground caters to RVers with 15 utility sites that provide water and electricity hookups. While the park maintains a rustic atmosphere, it includes essential conveniences for a comfortable stay:

  • A central dump station located near the park entrance.
  • Modern restroom facilities equipped with hot showers.
  • Dedicated fire rings and sturdy picnic tables at each site.

Most sites are nestled within the woods, offering a sense of privacy. Travelers can make use of the large picnic shelters and the iconic brick warehouse, which is a popular landmark for photography and historical exploration within the park grounds.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Adventure lies just beyond the park boundaries. Visitors can take a short drive to the Southworth Ferry Terminal for a scenic boat ride to West Seattle or Vashon Island. History enthusiasts will appreciate the proximity to Bremerton, home to the Puget Sound Navy Museum and the historic USS Turner Joy. For those seeking local flavor, the charming downtown areas of Port Orchard and Gig Harbor offer boutique shopping, waterfront dining, and local craft breweries.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is ideal for history buffs who enjoy exploring remnants of the past while surrounded by nature. It is a fantastic choice for families looking for a quiet basecamp to explore the Kitsap Peninsula without the noise of a commercial resort. Because the utility sites can accommodate rigs up to 60 feet, it is also a big-rig friendly option for those seeking a state park experience with the convenience of power and water.

Great park for camping or a day trip. Multiple walking trails, beach access and some history all together! Campsite are almost all nicely spaced. We have enjoyed our multiple visits.

Manchester State Park is nestled on Kitsap Peninsula just a ferry ride away from Seattle but you would never know it There are hiking trails through green lush forest full of history dating back to WWI.

I found this location to be more of a day outing for friends and/or family. There are a few group shelters with the main building -a historic torpedo warehouse- also as a covered area to hold an event. There are hiking trails here as well.

Beautiful scenic views everywhere you look. Old unused navy Fort, Amazing sea life cool old buildings. forest trails? Yes! Beach walking? Yes! A trail by the beach? Yes! All the best. Cool sea life and all kinds of boats. Mucky beach so bring your muck boots! Spooky old fort stairs area. A smelly smell? Sometimes! Very cool park. Always enjoy it every time we go high or low tide, rain or shine. We saw shrimp in the tide pool and something slimy under a rock this time but we see something new every time we go
