Mark Twain/Markham Springs

Overview

Markham Springs Recreation Area, nestled within the expansive Mark Twain National Forest, offers a serene retreat rooted in American history. Located near Williamsville, Missouri, this site is centered around a bubbling natural spring and a historic mill site. The area was developed largely by the Civilian Conservation Corps during the 1930s, leaving behind a legacy of rustic charm and stone architecture that defines the park's unique character.

Location & Surroundings

Situated along the banks of the Black River, the park is immersed in the lush woodlands of the Missouri Ozarks. The surrounding landscape features rugged hills, limestone bluffs, and crystal-clear waters, providing a picturesque backdrop for any camping trip. Its position in Wayne County makes it an ideal gateway for exploring the natural wonders of Southeast Missouri while remaining tucked away from the noise of major highways.

Amenities & Park Features

The facility caters to RV travelers with several sites offering electric hookups that accommodate different rig sizes. While the setting is rustic, guests have access to essential features including a boat ramp for river access and drinking water. The park is home to the historic Fuchs House and several scenic walking paths, including the Eagle Boardwalk, which allows visitors to explore the wetlands and spring branch without disturbing the local ecosystem.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty to do, from fishing for smallmouth bass in the river to hiking through the surrounding forest. Just a short drive away, travelers can visit Lake Wappapello State Park for larger boating excursions or explore the trails at Sam A. Baker State Park. For those needing supplies or a taste of local culture, the nearby city of Poplar Bluff offers additional dining and shopping options within easy reach.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is ideal for nature enthusiasts and history buffs who prefer a quiet, authentic camping experience over a high-traffic resort. It is perfect for RVers who enjoy birdwatching and photography, as the spring and river attract diverse wildlife. If you appreciate a peaceful environment where the sound of flowing water is your primary soundtrack, Markham Springs provides the perfect setting for a traditional Ozark getaway.

Very nice campground. Electric, showers, dumpster, bathrooms, and water spigot. Very clean and well maintained. With my pass it was only $8.50/night. Beatiful woods.

We stayed in the house for a couple of days for Christmas. The house was great except: 1. We didn't know the water wasn't drinkable until we got there. 2. The house was built in the 30's and the mattresses were probably from then as well.

River access, campgrounds that look very over grown and primitive. The spring lake is not much better needs to be cleaned out, and the mill taken care of. But it was a neat stop nonetheless. Plus i got to see an armadillo on the way out of the park!

We had rented the house in the Markham spring park early June 2021. It was a mixed bag experience. We loved the setting of the house on top of the lake. Hiking trail started basically from the house. It was a good hike up and then gradual down slope with finishing walk by the Black River. There had been lots of leaves so view of river was obstruct but you can find a few windows for sure. We got accustomed for higher quality AirB&B rental so house and equipment was pretty poor. One of the kids fall asleep on a couch just to wake up with sentipeedes crolling over him, his words "I had woke up in the horror house". Grill next to the house was broken so we walked over to camp pavilion to use large grill over there, it worked out well as pavilion was not used. Overall rating is 3 great location with house setup leaving a lot to be desired.

Markham Spring was a lovely little stop for a walk and to enjoy the crystal-clear spring water. There are camping and picnic areas all around for a stop or to have lunch. My only complaint was there was not a trash can available.
