Martinak

Overview

Martinak State Park offers a peaceful retreat where the Choptank River and Watts Creek converge on Maryland's Eastern Shore. Established on land donated by Alma Martinak in 1961, this destination preserves the natural beauty of the region's mature hardwood forests and loblolly pines. The park serves as a serene environment for RV travelers seeking to connect with nature while exploring the historical and ecological significance of the riverfront heritage in Caroline County.

Location & Surroundings

Situated just south of Denton, Maryland, the park provides an authentic experience of the state's coastal plain geography. The landscape is defined by its scenic riverfront views and lush wetlands that attract a variety of local wildlife. As part of the tranquil Eastern Shore, the surrounding area feels tucked away from the hustle of major metropolitan centers, offering a flat terrain that is ideal for gentle walking and observing the tidal Choptank River.

Amenities & Park Features

The park features 63 campsites, with many offering 30-amp electric hookups suitable for a range of RV sizes. While there are no individual sewer connections at the sites, a central dump station is conveniently located for guest use. Visitors have access to modern bathhouses equipped with hot showers and flush toilets. Additional features include a boat ramp for river access, a dedicated fishing pier, and the Frank M. Oberle, Jr. Nature Center, which provides educational insights into the local ecosystem.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Beyond the park boundaries, the historic town of Denton offers charming architecture and local dining opportunities. The Choptank River is a major draw for kayaking and boating enthusiasts who wish to navigate the winding Maryland waterways. Anglers frequently visit the area to catch perch, catfish, and bass from the shore or by boat. For those looking for further exploration, Tuckahoe State Park is a short drive away, offering an arboretum and an extensive network of multi-use trails.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for travelers who prefer a quiet, rustic camping experience over a high-activity commercial resort. It is a fantastic choice for birdwatchers and nature photographers who appreciate the diverse local fauna and seasonal changes in the forest. Families will enjoy the on-site playground and accessible hiking trails, while anglers and paddlers will find the direct water access and boat launch facilities highly convenient for a weekend on the water.

Had a fun time with these guys, they really cheer me up. We went fishin' in the lake and had bliss. While listening to rock and blues. The view was amazing, I could see and feel the sun burnin' my eyes...

Cute little place! It was $50 a night for the basic cabin (dogwood) which had a full size bed and bunk bed. Had an AC unit, two outlets, a small table inside. Was very clean no bugs! The bathrooms were so clean you could eat off the floor! Very clean park, dog friendly, kid friendly. Big fishing spot. Super close to a walmart, gas station, fast food, and other little stores. Highly recommend!

Nice basic campground with a small lake, boat launch, amphitheater and short hiking trails. Bathrooms ok but took forever to get hot water. Dump station closed. Easy trips to Annapolis, DC and Baltimore from here!

Mini cabins in the non electric loop have electric! This was a great place to stay, with mostly clean bathrooms and shower stalls, a great fire pit and plenty of room to roam.

Great park with trails, fishing areas, camping and opportunities for photography. Seems to be well maintained. Edit: So, I was looking at the park map and saw there's a trail that goes by the amphitheater and while looking for said trail after parking in the parking lot, I get followed by a park ranger the entire time and never did find the trailhead. Instead of following me in your vehicle, maybe ask what I was looking for rather than aggressively following me. There are no signs saying I can't walk the Mardela trail. Maybe put some up if it's not allowed and remove it from the map.

This park was great for camping! The staff were very friendly and the park was very clean and quiet. There were plenty of restrooms located throughout the park that were very clean and I witnessed staff cleaning them throughout the day. We stayed during Memorial Day weekend and the park had a planned concert at the amphitheater which was a nice surprise. We also saw a lot of wild life (beavers, snakes, birds, lizards, butterflies, etc.). The nature center was fun and I was surprised it was open during the weekend for visitors. They had some fish, snakes and turtles for guests to learn about as well as other fun activities geared for kids. There were canoe and kayak rentals available for visitors near the boat launch. The only negative that I would say is that the water nearest the campground was kind of dirty and not recommended for swimming. I did see people swimming further out in the river near the point trail where the water has a better current. Overall, this park is great and we'd definitely come back again!
