McDowell Mountain Regional Park

Overview

McDowell Mountain Regional Park offers an immersive desert experience spanning over 21,000 acres in the lower Verde River basin. This Maricopa County gem is celebrated for its pristine Sonoran Desert landscape and dramatic elevation changes that capture the essence of Arizona. For RVers, it provides a quiet escape from the urban sprawl while remaining accessible to modern conveniences. The park is a sanctuary for local flora and fauna, including the iconic saguaro cactus, making it a premier choice for nature photography and birdwatching throughout the year.

Location & Surroundings

Situated near Fort McDowell and Fountain Hills, the park provides a stunning backdrop of the McDowell Mountain Range. The surrounding area is characterized by rugged peaks and saguaro-filled valleys that transform into a vibrant display of color during sunset. While the park feels remote, it is conveniently located just a short drive from the Verde River, providing a unique contrast between arid desert terrain and nearby riparian habitats. The park's proximity to the Tonto National Forest adds an extra layer of scenic depth for travelers.

Amenities & Park Features

The E.I. Rowland Campground features 76 developed sites that are spacious enough for large RVs and trailers. Each site is thoughtfully positioned to offer privacy and views of the surrounding mountains. Notable features include:

  • Water and electrical hookups (30/50 amp) at every site
  • Picnic tables and fire rings for evening gatherings
  • Centrally located dump station and modern restrooms
Guests have access to hot showers and flushing toilets, ensuring a comfortable stay for those planning an extended desert retreat without sacrificing basic necessities.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor recreation is the heart of this destination, featuring over 50 miles of multi-use trails. It is a world-class destination for mountain bikers, offering competitive tracks and technical loops. Nearby, visitors can witness the famous fountain in Fountain Hills or explore the Scottsdale shopping districts just a few miles away. The nearby Verde River offers opportunities for kayaking and fishing, providing a refreshing escape during the warmer months, while the park’s dark skies make it a favorite spot for evening stargazing.

Who This Park Is Best For

The Campground was very clean. Everyone who worked at the party were nice. The sites are level and the views are beautiful. The trails are fun for hiking and biking.

This is a hidden gem for those who want to feel seclusion but still close enough to civilization. McDowell Mountain Regional Park offers beautiful views from just about every site. The sites are spacious and there’s plenty of room between your neighbors. The restrooms and showers are clean and well maintained. It’s definitely off the beaten path but well worth the visit.

Awesome park with great facilities and trails. $7 for a day pass to get in. I did see a few rattlesnakes so watch out for those! Saw lots of walkers, runners, and bikers on the trails.

The Two Crazy Vegans have stayed at the EJ Rowland Campground here so many times we have stats on campspots. There is trails galore and the bathrooms are always clean. Views can be breathtaking and its close to us so we come when we can.

Perfect of you are a cyclist either mountain, gravel or road. If you have a small camper or tent or car camping then camp at ironwood campground for just $22 a night and save as it’s more basic here than the main campground. There’s water, toilets and a new shower block that was closed in March 25 but opens soon.

Nice park with plenty of trails to explore and some campgrounds and picnic areas. If you have a state park ticket you can get in for free.

Desert. Park facilities very clean, rv spots are tight. You get your own gate and gatecode and the park closes at night. Reasonable rates and friendly and helpful staff. Definitely recommend. Can't get a more safe place to leave your rv.

We hiked the north trail loop today and it was so peaceful and beautiful! We stopped at the visitor center first and the nice ranger lady gave us a color pamphlet with a numbered tour of all the desert plants. This park is a gem. Thank you Arizona!

We absolutely loved this campground! It is amazingly gorgeous! There are hiking trails glore! McDowell is a mountain biker's paradise. There are miles and miles of trails in the beautiful desert landscape. We saw so many birds, desert wren, a cardinal, and harrison hawks sitting on the giant Sagauro cactus! Absolutely spectular! The facilities are great too! The bathrooms and showers were very clean. There is water and power at your campsite with a dump station at the entrance/exit. We highly recommend McDowell Mountain Regional Park!
