McHood Park

Overview

McHood Park offers a unique desert oasis experience just outside the historic town of Winslow. Positioned along the banks of Clear Creek Reservoir, this city-managed park provides a scenic and affordable base for travelers who appreciate nature over luxury. The park serves as a gateway to East Clear Creek, a hidden gem in Northern Arizona that provides a lush contrast to the surrounding landscape. It is a favorite for those looking to escape the standard highway-side RV parks in favor of direct water access and dramatic canyon views.

Location & Surroundings

The park is situated approximately five miles southeast of downtown Winslow, nestled in the Navajo County high desert. The surrounding environment features a striking contrast between arid plateau terrain and the deep blue waters of the creek. Steep canyon walls rise above the reservoir, providing a stunning backdrop for photography and sunset views. Its proximity to Route 66 makes it a convenient and memorable detour for cross-country travelers. The high-desert elevation also ensures pleasantly cool nights, even during the warmer summer months.

Amenities & Park Features

This is a rustic facility primarily focused on dry camping, making it a true boondocking-style destination. While some sites offer limited electric hookups, visitors should generally plan for a traditional camping experience. The park provides access to a central water station and vault toilets for guest convenience. The highlight of the park is the concrete boat ramp, which provides easy entry for kayaks, canoes, and small motorized boats. Picnic tables and grills are scattered throughout the campsites, encouraging relaxed outdoor dining by the water.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Water activities are the primary draw, with many visitors spending their days paddling through the canyon to explore the winding waterways. Fishing for trout and catfish is also a popular pastime from both the shore and boats. Beyond the park, travelers can visit the famous Standin' on the Corner Park in downtown Winslow or explore the ancient ruins at Homolovi State Park. The world-renowned Meteor Crater and the historic La Posada Hotel are also just a short drive away, offering plenty of daytime exploration options.

Who This Park Is Best For

This location is ideal for self-contained RVers who enjoy water sports and rugged natural beauty. It is a perfect fit for budget-conscious travelers and those looking for a quiet, scenic alternative to busy commercial campgrounds. If you prefer paddling and peaceful scenery over resort-style amenities like swimming pools or laundry facilities, McHood Park provides a refreshing and authentic break. It is particularly well-suited for birdwatchers and photographers who want to capture the unique wildlife and geology of the Clear Creek area.

Restrooms are not working, but you can go to the love station in Winslow arizona, there is a dump station and water fill there as well. There is no electricity so fill up on propane and and gas for your generator.

Was a cool experience. Camp sites are close together but there was hardly anyone they and the on site camp host never even came around to check my ticket. Beautiful area, beautiful lake. Lots of ducks. I stayed on a Thursday night, it's probably busier during the weekend.

This is definitely an oasis in the desert! This place surprised me when I went searching for it after hearing about it. This campground located by Clear Creek Reservoir offers fishing, boating, paddleboarding as well as a picnic area and bbq pits for daily &/or nightly use. There's no electric or water hookups at the campground, but is a clean and basic place to enjoy peace and solitude.

$7 day use/$15 overnight. Pleasant enough place except bathroom/shower blockhouse not functional. Toilet full of excrement, no water for shower. Nice scenery, quiet and off the road. If I had checked the bath/shower situation before checking in I would've just driven on.

This place is a pretty dope spot to camp. You are able to fit a whole small village at the campsite areas, so you can set up your small car mansions.

Oh man this place is nice! Easy computer kiosk check-in for $10 day/$15 night, beautiful scenery, water and playground. Very popular place for Arizonan kayakers (yes, that's a thing...). Separate camping and day use areas. A must for fisherpeople.

Little park area is nice but, 15 for camping here is outrageous. No showers, they are broken. Bathroom out of a horror movie. A tremendous amount of trash. Sure it’s probably nice to play in the park and fish. But that’s about it.
