Overview

Military Park Gila Bend FamCamp, also known as the Gila Bend AFAF FamCamp, offers a peaceful and secure retreat for eligible military members and their families. Situated within the high desert of Arizona, this park serves as a convenient desert oasis for those traveling between San Diego and Tucson. While the base itself is relatively small, the FamCamp provides a welcoming atmosphere for retirees and active-duty personnel seeking a well-maintained space to rest.

Location & Surroundings

Located just south of the town of Gila Bend, the park is surrounded by the vast, open landscapes of the Sonoran Desert. The setting is characterized by rugged mountains on the horizon and iconic saguaro cacti. Its proximity to Interstate 8 and Highway 85 makes it an ideal waypoint for cross-country travelers. Visitors often appreciate the dark night skies, which offer exceptional stargazing opportunities far from the light pollution of major metropolitan areas.

Amenities & Park Features

The park features level sites equipped with full hookups, including 30 and 50-amp electrical service. Travelers with larger setups will find the pull-through sites particularly easy to navigate. On-site facilities include:

  • Clean restrooms and hot showers
  • A well-maintained laundry room
  • A community lounge for social gatherings
  • A dedicated pet-friendly area

The park is designed for efficiency and ease, ensuring that long-haul travelers have the basic comforts needed for a refreshing stay.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Nature enthusiasts will enjoy the short drive to the Painted Rock Petroglyph Site, which showcases hundreds of ancient rock carvings. The surrounding Sonoran Desert National Monument offers miles of rugged terrain for hiking and photography. Within the town of Gila Bend, visitors can explore local history or visit the famous Space Age Lodge. The area is a birdwatcher's paradise, especially during migration seasons when various species pass through the desert landscape.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is best suited for military-affiliated travelers who value security and affordability over luxury resort amenities. It is a perfect fit for big-rig owners looking for a hassle-free stopover with plenty of space. If you prefer a quiet, minimalist environment where you can enjoy the natural beauty of the Arizona desert while remaining close to major travel corridors, this FamCamp is an excellent choice for your itinerary.

It's not the Ritz. You use the RO water. But the sites level. Power stable. Laundry on site. Lounge space with free tv and wifi. $12/nite. We love it. And the sunsets are amazing!

This was a very nice stop off. Absolutely no services, even a vending machine. Nice clean spots but numbers are hard to find in the dark after hours. The outer loop you should approach from dirt in back where you will see the numbers, pull through to the road. Very quite. Really enjoyed our $12 Full Hook up spot. Three Free laundry sets, puzzle table and book exchange. Again no services so if you need a coke or laundry soap you won’t find it on base.

RV camped here, nice laundry, few palm trees, level sites. 108° in the summer, no shade, be prepared for hot concrete, protect the pets paws! Stayed 9/1/24

The RV park is on a portion of Luke AFB so it requires military access. The RV sites are level, pull through, with full hookups - but not much else except for the laundry and book exchange. It's a bare bones campground that's 6 or 7 miles from the highway. We had some noise during the night at 2am for probably 30 minutes while there; not sure if it was a jet being worked on or an APU running, but it was loud enough to wake us up. Only plus is the $12/night fee.

Love this place! Not as fancy as the others but it's quiet, everyone is friendly! There is not a grocery store in town but there are a few restaurants, dollar plus seems to serve as the replacent for groceries. It has a good variety of staples and frozen foods, nothing outdated. You have to drive to Avondale, about an hour away for your major stores. If you want distance, quiet and beautiful sunsets, this is a great place to be. Oh, except the jets that practice touch and goes a few hours a day. Alot less active than an active base. You can have UPS delivered to the inn here, Fed ex will deliver to your camp spot. Free laundry, full hook ups $12 a night! We will be back!
