Mississinewa Lake

Overview

Mississinewa Lake is a premier destination for outdoor enthusiasts, offering a sprawling 14,000-acre state recreation area centered around a massive reservoir. Managed by the Indiana DNR, this location serves as a vital hub for conservation and recreation in the heart of the state. The park is characterized by its expansive water views and well-maintained campgrounds, providing a balanced experience for those who enjoy both rugged nature and modern conveniences. It is a cornerstone of the Miami County landscape, inviting RVers to explore a diverse environment of prairie and hardwood forests.

Location & Surroundings

Situated just outside of Peru, Indiana, the park sits within the scenic Wabash River Valley. The surrounding terrain is a peaceful mix of agricultural fields and dense woodlands that change brilliantly with the seasons. The 3,000-acre reservoir is the focal point of the area, providing a vast blue horizon that contrasts beautifully with the lush greenery of the shoreline. The location is far enough from major cities to offer a dark-sky experience for stargazers, yet it remains easily accessible for travelers moving through north-central Indiana.

Amenities & Park Features

The facility is exceptionally well-equipped for the modern RVer, primarily centered within the Miami State Recreation Area. The park features:

  • Over 400 electric hookup sites designed to accommodate various rig sizes.
  • A large sandy swimming beach with modern bathhouses and snack stands.
  • Multiple boat launch ramps and a seasonal marina for watercraft access.
The campground also provides clean comfort stations with hot showers and convenient dump stations, ensuring a comfortable stay for those planning extended visits in their motorhomes or trailers.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Activities at the lake are dominated by the water, with premier fishing for crappie, walleye, and catfish. Boaters and kayakers can spend days exploring the jagged shoreline and hidden coves. For land-based adventure, the Blue Heron Trail offers scenic overlooks that are perfect for photography. Just a short drive away, visitors can explore the International Circus Hall of Fame in Peru or witness the striking geological beauty of the Seven Pillars of the Mississinewa, a series of limestone formations carved by the river over centuries.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is an ideal match for traditional camping families who prioritize water-based activities and a social campground atmosphere. Its massive scale makes it one of the better choices for large group rallies or multi-family gatherings where space and amenities are high priorities. Additionally, birdwatchers and nature photographers will find the protected wetlands and migration patterns highly rewarding. If you are looking for a reliable, well-managed public park with plenty of room to roam, Mississinewa Lake is a perfect fit for your Indiana itinerary.

I love mississinwa camping, I camp several times a year. But weekends and Halloween which I have not been for 2 yrs it is just a drunk fest with people cutting through your camp site where your kids and pets are on foot or bicycles, when you say something to them nicely they just start arguing carrying their beer and won't quit. If this don't stop this is going to end up with fights and someone hurt. They used to patrol more. Kids on these new scooters with electric motors run 40_ 50 mph all night long..This needs to stop also. Sorry but it is a fact!

Spent the afternoon kayaking alone. Had a wonderful time. The water is not hard to row against any direction that you go, and it was even a little bit windy. Stopped and hi to a few other people on the lake.

Beautiful place that made me all the more determined to move to Peru. My parents, daughter and I went to Mississinewa Reservoir when we came down from upstate New York to visit my brother and his family who live in Amboy and work in Rochester. This city gives me the welcoming feel of a small tourist village in upstate New York that is home to 2 castles - one of which is world renowned. If you're in the area, I suggest checking this out.

On Saturday, January 11, 2025, my husband and I took a short trip to Mississinewa Reservoir to see what it had to offer. The snow-covered landscape was absolutely stunning, and we took so many pictures to capture the beauty of the area. We thoroughly enjoyed our time there. Due to the time of year and the snow, there were hardly any other visitors, which made the experience feel peaceful and serene. I even got to use the snow mode on my Jeep, which made me giddy with excitement. 😊 We explored various parts of the Mississinewa area and appreciated every moment of our visit. We are already planning to return later this year to RV camp at this beautiful location. It was a fantastic day, and we look forward to creating even more memories there!

We went here for some fishing and we had a good time. We didn’t catch anything. Overall area was clean, and there was a nice park that was clean and well kept.
