Mohawk Trail State Forest
Overview
Deep in the Berkshire Mountains, Mohawk Trail State Forest offers a rugged retreat along one of the nation's oldest scenic routes. This park spans over 6,000 acres of lush woodland and mountainous terrain, providing a primitive camping experience that prioritizes a deep connection with nature. It is home to some of the tallest trees in Massachusetts, creating a majestic canopy for travelers seeking a quiet, forested escape away from the digital world and the noise of the city.
Location & Surroundings
Located in the historic town of Charlemont, the park sits along the famous Mohawk Trail (Route 2). The landscape is defined by the dramatic intersection of the Cold River and the Deerfield River. Visitors are surrounded by steep ridges and dense forests, making it a prime destination for autumn foliage viewing and serene riverfront exploration. The surrounding area remains largely undeveloped, maintaining a historic mountain pass feel that captures the true essence of rural New England wilderness.
Amenities & Park Features
While the park is rustic and lacks full hookups, it provides essential comforts for the self-contained traveler looking for an authentic experience. Each site features a heavy-duty picnic table and fire ring for traditional camp cooking under the stars. The wooded sites offer a sense of privacy and a genuine back-to-basics atmosphere. Key features include:
- Modern restrooms and seasonal hot showers for guest convenience.
- A centrally located dump station to support self-contained RVs and trailers.
- Scenic swimming holes located along the pristine, cold riverbanks.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Adventure seekers will find plenty of excitement nearby with whitewater rafting on the Deerfield River and world-class ziplining tours. Hikers can access the historic Mahican-Mohawk Trail directly from the park boundaries to explore deep gorges and old-growth forests. For a slower pace, the nearby Bridge of Flowers in Shelburne Falls offers a stunning botanical walk. Regional highlights include:
- Whitewater rafting and kayaking on the Deerfield River rapids.
- Zipline canopy tours and mountain biking in downtown Charlemont.
- Visiting the historic Bridge of Flowers and local glacial potholes.
Who This Park Is Best For
This destination is ideal for van lifers and small trailer owners who appreciate a quiet environment and the calming sounds of the river. It is not recommended for large Class A motorhomes due to narrow access roads and specific site dimensions. If you are a traveler who prefers wooded solitude and outdoor recreation over resort-style amenities, this state forest provides the ultimate Massachusetts mountain sanctuary for your next road trip through the Berkshires.

Drove past this state forest on the Mohawk trail, didnt enter the state forest but the drive was pretty with mostly yellow fall colors.

Incredible views of some the tallest pines in New England. Some reach up to 170 feet tall.

Stayed with my sisters. Always loved it. Never had a problem. They don't worry about fires being 5 in high and they let you enjoy your camping experience

Started at the parking lot and walked the edge of the stream down to the waterfall. It was a nice walk. We found out on the way back that there is a trail between the road and stream if you prefer that. Very nice views and it’s amazing to see all the different rock formations and how the water eroded them differently. It has a few different shoots and little spillways. Some of the pools were loaded with tadpoles. I would love to come check it out again when the waters higher.

My family just got back from the Mohawk Trail State Forest where we spent 3 days camping. We had both a tent site and a cabin (the older kids still wanted to experience tent life). We had an awesome time. The grounds were immaculate, the staff was friendly. The bathrooms were the cleanest I have ever encountered in a DCR facility. The highlight of our trip was the guided tour of some of the tallest trees in the Northeast, our “interpreter” was Christian, he was incredible! Very knowledgeable, friendly, and you could tell he loves his job! We will definitely be making a return trip!!

In early February stunning views with snow and ice covered river snaking between mountains. Signs of the bear country are also inspiring!

Beautiful and serene. We have had some nice hikes there. I would have given the Park a five star rating, but my wife needed a rest room and they said it was for campers only.
