Monongahela/Big Bend
Overview
Big Bend Campground, managed by the U.S. Forest Service, offers a unique camping experience within the Monongahela National Forest. Tucked away in a sharp loop of the South Branch Potomac River, this destination is renowned for its dramatic landscape and tranquil atmosphere. It serves as a gateway for travelers who want to immerse themselves in the rugged beauty of West Virginia's mountain country without the noise of modern life. The park is characterized by its secluded riverfront sites and a deep sense of immersion in the Appalachian wilderness.
Location & Surroundings
The park is situated deep inside the Smoke Hole Canyon, accessible via winding mountain roads that offer stunning vistas of towering limestone cliffs. The campground is literally surrounded by water on three sides due to the river's unique horseshoe bend. This geography creates a natural sense of isolation and peace, with the sounds of the rushing river providing a constant backdrop to your stay. The scenic canyon walls provide a dramatic contrast to the lush greenery of the forest floor, making every campsite feel like a private retreat.
Amenities & Park Features
As a forest service site, Big Bend provides a rustic camping experience rather than a luxury resort vibe. The campground features 46 sites, many of which can accommodate RVs and trailers, though operators of larger rigs should navigate the narrow access roads with care. On-site amenities include vault toilets, seasonal drinking water, and a convenient dump station for self-contained units. While there are no electric or water hookups at individual sites, the easy river access for launching tubes or kayaks makes it a favorite for water enthusiasts who enjoy primitive-style camping.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty to explore within a short distance of the park. The South Branch Potomac River is a premier destination for trout fishing and seasonal paddling. A short drive takes you to the iconic Seneca Rocks, where hikers and climbers gather to witness one of the state's most famous landmarks. For those who prefer underground wonders, Smoke Hole Caverns is located nearby, offering guided tours through fascinating geological formations. Hiking trails, such as the North Fork Mountain Trail, provide expansive views of the surrounding ridges.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is best suited for adventurous RVers who value scenery and seclusion over high-speed internet and modern amenities. It is a haven for anglers, paddlers, and photographers looking to capture the natural essence of West Virginia. Because cell service is virtually non-existent in the canyon, it is the perfect location for those looking to disconnect from technology and enjoy a traditional campfire experience. It is ideal for travelers with smaller to mid-sized rigs who are comfortable with dry camping in a pristine forest setting.

Big Bend Campground is a beautiful place with a great family atmosphere. The campsites are large and accommodate RVs and/or multiple tents. The best part about this place is the nearly 360° lazy river tubing experience. This place has no cell service and you’ll have to travel along a 2 1/2 mile dirt road to finally get to the campground. The Camp Hosts were great and offered a lot of local information and tips. While this is a great location and provides memorable adventures, it would be great if the picnic tables and some of the fire rings could be updated as they’re nearing the end of their service life. However, this simply a great place to unhook from the daily grind.

Rick and Tomiko are the best camp hosts. Camp is very well maintained. We had no mosquito problems at all and didn't even wear bug spray all weekend. River float is shallow and slow which was comforting bringing my 2 and 4 year old on. Would love to make this a family regular place to camp. We had no cell service. A plus for us but maybe not everyone.

This place is amazing! So beautiful and relaxing! It's way out in the middle of no where so you really feel the wilderness. At the same time, there's modern amenities to keep you comfortable! Nothing like a hot shower after playing in the river! Our campsite was in the upper loop and we had a great view of the night sky. The camp hosts are super friendly and accommodating! Bring floaties to play in the river. This is the most REAL lazy river experience you could wish for! So much fun!

Rick and Tomikio were some of the best camp hosts we’ve ever had! Don’t forget your inner tubes for an incredible weekend of floating on the river at this unique and remote campground. The hot showers were amazing and they sell firewood on site! We will definitely be back.

My favorite place in the entire world. I've been coming here since I was an infant in the 90s, I got engaged here, and now I bring my kids here to make their own memories riding the big bend loop. We love the remoteness, easy access to the beautiful river, and if you stay on the river side of the river loop the sound of the rapids will lull you to sleep each evening. The new camp hosts were friendly and are keeping the place nicely maintained. Can't wait to be back again soon in our own slice of heaven.

This whole area is really pretty. The creek is very nice and a high point of this campground. Camp host was a super nice guy. There's a lot of great spots to choose from here also. Also lots of wildlife running around.

Closed, with trash and debris everywhere. It hadn't been cleaned up from the last season.
