Monongahela/Spruce Knob Lake
Overview
Located in the heart of the Monongahela National Forest, Spruce Knob Lake Campground offers a quintessential mountain camping experience. At an elevation of nearly 4,000 feet, this destination provides a cool, crisp escape from the summer heat. Travelers looking for a serene mountain retreat will find themselves surrounded by dense forests and the tranquil waters of West Virginia's highest lake. It is a place where the sounds of the forest replace the noise of the highway, perfect for those seeking peace and quiet.
Location & Surroundings
The campground is situated near Circleville, WV, tucked within a landscape of rugged ridges and deep valleys. The Monongahela National Forest serves as a stunning backdrop, characterized by lush spruce forests and diverse wildlife. Because of its remote location, the area boasts some of the darkest skies on the East Coast, making it a premier spot for stargazing. Visitors should prepare for winding mountain roads that offer breathtaking vistas at every turn as they ascend toward the park.
Amenities & Park Features
As a traditional Forest Service site, this park focuses on a primitive experience rather than modern luxury. There are no electric, water, or sewer hookups available, making it a prime destination for dry camping enthusiasts. The park provides the following features for visitors:
- Vault toilets maintained regularly throughout the season
- Hand-pumped potable water available at communal stations
- Spacious wooded sites equipped with picnic tables and fire rings
While big rigs may find the narrow access roads and shorter pads challenging, many sites can accommodate mid-sized trailers and camper vans comfortably.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The 25-acre Spruce Knob Lake is the primary draw for trout fishing and paddling. Only electric motors or non-motorized boats are permitted, ensuring the water remains quiet and glassy. A short drive away is the Spruce Knob Lookout Tower, which provides incredible 360-degree views from the highest point in the state. Hiking enthusiasts can explore the Whispering Spruce Trail or take a day trip to the iconic jagged cliffs of Seneca Rocks for world-class climbing and photography.
Who This Park Is Best For

Campgrounds were a bit too close for my liking, but all were well maintained and were level. I camp out of the back of my truck, so there were several drive in ready spots. Definitely cooler in the summers months, though as others have mentioned - zero cell service, so come prepared as it's about 30-40 minute drive down the mountain. Price was fair and there was firewood for sale. Plenty of dumpsters and vault toilets, but no running water. I prefer dispersed camping, but I would come again if the opportunity arises.

Very beautiful, quiet campground. Well maintained, clean vault toilets. Limited potable water available. Staff is very friendly and helpful.

I'm not a fan of camp grounds, but this one is pretty good. I would definitely recommend it. It's right next to Spruce Knob Lake and only about 20 minutes from Spruce Knob.

Great place to get away. There is no electricity and only one source of non drinking water. But it's worth it. Host was very friendly and helpful.

Nice remote campground. It's a 30 minute or more drive from any type of civilization so be prepared. The roads up here are good gravel roads. The campsites are pretty basic, I recommend the walk in tent sites 35-40 for optimum forest feel. Zero cell service.
