Monongahela/Summit Lake

Overview

Summit Lake Campground offers a serene and authentic mountain escape within the vast expanse of the Monongahela National Forest. Located at an elevation of approximately 3,300 feet, this destination provides a cool refuge for RV travelers during the summer months. It is a primitive, Forest Service-managed site that prioritizes the natural environment over modern luxuries, making it a favorite for those seeking a tranquil wilderness experience in the heart of West Virginia.

Location & Surroundings

Nestled just outside of Richwood, WV, the park surrounds the picturesque 43-acre Summit Lake. The landscape is characterized by dense hardwood forests and the rugged beauty of the Allegheny Mountains. Travelers will find themselves immersed in a secluded atmosphere where the sounds of nature replace highway noise. The campground serves as a perfect base camp for exploring the high-country reaches of the Highland Scenic Highway, which is known for its stunning overlooks and diverse ecosystems.

Amenities & Park Features

As a traditional forest campground, facilities here are intentionally simple. The park features two loops with sites that include fire rings and picnic tables. While there are no electric or water hookups available, visitors have access to vault toilets and potable water provided by hand-crank pumps. The roads within the park are paved, which assists with navigation, though larger rigs should exercise caution. Most sites are shaded, offering a private feel that complements the rustic camping style preferred by boondockers.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The primary draw is the water, where anglers frequently visit for trout fishing and kayaking. Electric motors are the only propulsion allowed, ensuring the lake remains quiet. Hikers can enjoy the Summit Lake Trail, a gentle path that circles the water’s edge. A short drive away, the Cranberry Glades Botanical Area offers a unique opportunity to see rare plants via a boardwalk, while the Falls of Hills Creek provides a spectacular look at three cascading waterfalls.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for self-contained RVers who enjoy dry camping and want to disconnect from digital distractions. It is a haven for nature photographers and outdoor enthusiasts who value immediate access to water and hiking trails. If you are looking for a resort-style experience with Wi-Fi and full hookups, this may not be the right fit. However, for those who appreciate starry nights and forest solitude, Summit Lake is an unforgettable West Virginia treasure.

The star rating is kind of redundant but the campground is great. There is a water sticker for cool clean water, a sheltered toilet that is actually nice. Not like the ones we used overseas with a million flies, smelled like a sewage plant, and would lose 10 lbs by stepping in. It was clean and very nice. The campground has a picnic table and metal fire/cook ring in every spot. You will want to bring your own firewood though. It's not just laying around within 100 ft of camping spots. They're are walking trails everywhere and a short stroll down to the lake, or a very short drive if your not able to walk through the terrain. This campground is in the national Forrest where there is an abundance of wild critters including bears. Don't call the DNR crying, when Yogi and Smokey attacks your campsite because you left your mama's meatloaf on the table overnight. Seriously if your new to camping do some research, a fed bear is a dead bear. It's a very nice place and I hope it can stay that way.

Nice campground with 2 loops. I don't think any of the sites are actually on the lake but some aren't far from it. There is a nice dock and landing to launch your boat. Camp sites are only $10 a night but I didn't see showers.

Beautiful. The water was getting really low though. I'd guess about 3 ft lower than average. It's beautiful if you can at and the cold check out the colors on all the trees

Great little campground. No hookups but paved for campers/RVs and a graveled fire pit area. Secluded, relaxing spot. Through the week it is not too busy. Of course, beautiful Summit Lake is within walking/biking distance.
