Moran

Overview

Moran State Park is the crown jewel of the San Juan Islands, offering an expansive 5,000-acre playground for outdoor enthusiasts. Located on Orcas Island near Olga, this park provides a lush, forested escape that feels worlds away from the hustle of the mainland. It is a place where the Pacific Northwest wilderness is preserved in its most rugged form, offering travelers a deep connection to the natural environment and a break from the digital world.

Location & Surroundings

Situated on the eastern side of Orcas Island, the park is defined by the towering heights of Mount Constitution and the tranquil waters of Cascade Lake. To reach this destination, travelers must navigate a scenic ferry ride from Anacortes, which sets a slow, intentional pace for the journey. The surrounding area is a stunning mix of dense old-growth forest, hidden waterfalls, and sparkling freshwater shorelines that change beautifully with the shifting seasons.

Amenities & Park Features

This is primarily a dry-camping destination, meaning there are no electrical or water hookups at the individual sites. The park provides designated RV sites across several campgrounds, including Midway and Northend, with some sites accommodating rigs up to 45 feet. Essential services are provided to ensure a comfortable stay while maintaining a rustic atmosphere:

  • Access to centralized dump stations and potable water filling areas.
  • Clean restrooms equipped with token-operated showers for guest use.
  • Private campsites featuring heavy-duty fire rings and large picnic tables.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The primary draw for many is the historic stone observation tower atop Mount Constitution, which provides 360-degree views of the San Juan Islands and the Canadian Gulf Islands. The park serves as a hub for recreational activities that celebrate the outdoors:

  • Traversing over 38 miles of multi-use trails perfect for hiking and seasonal mountain biking.
  • Engaging in freshwater activities like kayaking, fishing, and swimming at the park’s two large lakes.
  • Browsing local artisan shops or visiting historic buildings in the nearby hamlet of Olga.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is ideal for self-contained RVers who prioritize stunning natural vistas and quiet nights over modern resort amenities. It is a dream for outdoor adventurers and photographers who want to be steps away from breathtaking trailheads and scenic vistas. Because of the island’s winding, narrow roads and the lack of hookups, it is best suited for travelers who enjoy a rustic, boondocking-style experience in a world-class setting.

We did the full Mt. Constitution hike loop: Cascade Lake, Powerline Trail, around the back to Twin Lakes, then up to the summit and back down. 10 miles, 3200 vertical. Had it to ourselves. Fantastic.

An absolute favorite for good ole woods on the lake camping! Campgrounds have so much variety in shade, waterfront options, RV hookups, walk-in, and group sites. Their bathrooms and showers are well maintained, and the public use areas are always kept up as well. They staff a little snack shack where you can find limited swim gear and accessories, plus impressive snacks, coffee, ice cream, candy, etc. The lake is a non-motorized boat lake, but they rent out water toys or bring your own float islands and paddleboards. Mt. Constitution is also found within the park and is a must visit! Views into Canada and over the WA coast are to die for on a clear day. Whether you're visiting just for the day or longer, Moran State Park is an oasis worth experiencing!

We recently drove through Moran State Park to check it out for future visits, and it’s absolutely beautiful! The park sits right along the water and is incredibly lush and scenic. While there are no electrical hookups (which means we wouldn’t bring our RV), it’s perfect for tent camping or bringing our truck. We like to scope out parks ahead of time, and this one offers plenty of great sites to choose from, with four different camping areas. The park also has an awesome spot where you can rent kayaks and canoes, plus a designated swimming area with a beach. There are lots of amenities, and the restrooms were clean and well-kept throughout the park. A couple of tips: definitely book your campsite well in advance since this is a popular state park, and don’t forget to reserve your ferry tickets to Orcas Island both ways—especially on weekends, as the waits can be long. We’ll definitely be coming back here for camping and exploring more of what this amazing park has to offer!

Beautiful park with lots to do! You have the lake below Mount Constitution with rentals and food and a beach like atmosphere. You can go out Mount Constitution for trails or a big bike slog uphill. The views from the top of Mount Constitution are lovely. The whole area is great and it’s easy enough to ride an e-bike on the hills that go up and down.

Beautiful! Easy access to trails, amenities and a park. Just did the Cascade Lake trail, which is a lovely relatively easy less than 3 mile hike. The views are incredible and terrain varied from forest right down to the lake. There’s a snack shack there, bathrooms and picnic area. Definitely worth the $10 Parking/registration fee.
