Mount St Helens KOA

Overview

Nestled in the lush landscapes of Southwest Washington, the Mount St Helens KOA serves as a serene retreat for travelers exploring the Pacific Northwest. This park offers a classic camping atmosphere characterized by towering evergreens and a proximity to the volcanic wonders of the region. Whether you are arriving in a large motorhome or a compact travel trailer, the grounds provide a welcoming environment that balances natural beauty with modern convenience. It is widely recognized as a top-tier basecamp for explorers seeking to witness the regeneration of the forest following the historic 1980 eruption.

Location & Surroundings

Located in the charming town of Castle Rock, WA, this KOA is situated perfectly for those traveling along the I-5 corridor. The park is positioned near the scenic Toutle River, offering a peaceful backdrop that feels worlds away from the highway. The surrounding area is defined by rolling hills and dense forests, creating a cool, shaded environment even during the height of summer. Its location on the Spirit Lake Memorial Highway makes it the most convenient jumping-off point for visitors heading toward the volcanic monument’s main observation points.

Amenities & Park Features

The facility is packed with features designed to keep every member of the family entertained. Guests can enjoy the seasonal heated swimming pool or spend an afternoon at the private fishing pond. For those who prefer staying active, the park offers bike rentals and a miniature golf course. Practical needs are met with full hookup RV sites, clean laundry facilities, and an on-site store that serves fresh pizza and wings. Your furry companions are also welcome at the dedicated KampK9 dog park, ensuring the whole family enjoys the stay.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The primary draw is undoubtedly the Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument, with the Johnston Ridge Observatory located just a scenic drive away. Visitors can marvel at the crater and learn about the area's geological history through interactive exhibits. Closer to the park, Silver Lake offers excellent boating and fishing opportunities, while Seaquest State Park provides miles of hiking trails. For a more relaxed afternoon, the local visitor centers offer fascinating insights into the local ecosystem and the dramatic changes the landscape has undergone.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is ideal for active families who enjoy a mix of outdoor education and resort-style recreation. It is a perfect fit for RVers who value a shaded, wooded environment rather than a standard paved parking lot. Because of its proximity to the volcano, it is a "must-stay" for geology enthusiasts and nature photographers. If you are looking for a community-oriented park that provides a safe, engaging space for children while offering easy access to world-class natural landmarks, this Castle Rock location is a premier choice.

Very quiet and peaceful. Dee and her staff are very pleasant to work with. Great location not far from highway but not too close and away from town. restrooms and showers are extremely clean. Lots of room to walk your dog around. I highly recommend and next time I'm in the area this is my go to spot.

Everything worked well. Bathrooms and showers were clean. The playground was fun for the kids. The service was friendly. It's not a place I would call nice overall. Functional.

Loved my first outing of the year! Camp grounds were clean and good bathrooms with hot water! They even had showers! Worth the stay!

I recommend this KOA campground. It has full hooks up. There are both long term and short term spots for rvs. It is a solid pass through campground. It is quite at night and you don’t really hear the freeway noise at all. There is a train sound passing by at night but only heard it once. The campground is really clean and nice kept. The office closes at 5pm but they have self-in after hours box and you just pay the fee in cash (no checks). You can check-in at anytime which was nice for us driving in and not knowing what time we would arrive.

Great location with absolutely amazing hosts. Seriously everyone we dealt with at this KOA couldn’t have been any nicer. I will be staying here anytime we are in the area. It’s central to so many great spots and the hosts even put on events for the holidays.

Wow lots of bad reviews, but we thought the place was nice. True no shade trees & some spots were very tight but other things made it a good stay. I will post enough pictures so you can be the judge. Terraced rows of sites puts you not Looking into others RVs. Very clean & maintained park. Full timers are on the very top tier, giving them move room & privacy. Staff was very nice, the young man (Adam) even gave me tips on good hiking near by. There is a large fenced in dog park with large field beside it. Dog park is a little walk away & lights didn't work, but it was nice enough. Showers & bathrooms were clean, water was very hot/plenty of it. Great water pressure, outstanding. There is a hidden moss covered trail off the dog park area that we enjoyed stretching our legs after our drive in. Mt Saint Helens is very close as is the local town of Castle Rock. Very quite park & got a good nights sleep. Kids play area was great (see pic). Cheapest gas locally was near park at turn off, you don't need to go into town. Call them and ask if you can get site C-2 or C-3. They also have a couple pull throughs. We only stayed couple nights, because we were just passing through. Got a full day hiking in on Blast Zone Trail, near Mt Saint Helens. **DON'T EAT AT Chinese restaurant in town worst food ever**

This was an overnight stop for us on the way to Oregon. The entire campground was tidy and in good condition. This KOA is not extravagant; I believe it is listed as a Journey campground, which is in the lowest tier in the KOA franchise system. Access roads are paved, but all campsites are packed gravel. The locations is up a fairly steep hill and is terraced. There are 4 rows of camp sites, with some additional sites on the far north side of the park. A lane, and maybe a good portion of B appear to be long term tenants. C and D lanes appear to be for short term stays. There is a mix of full hookup, partial hookup and tent sites at this location. All of the campsites are very narrow, with a bit more space and landscaping up in the A and B rows. We were located in the D row with full hookups. We noticed a number of after hours arrivals, one of them arrived and parked to our left. They were gone the next day before we even got up! Be warned, there is little vegetation or trees to shade you during the day. Many campsites are bordered by the tall stumps of cut down trees, so at some point in the past they used to have more vegetation than they do now. The laundry room is clean and tidy. Wash prices seemed reasonable. They have a bill changer for quarters, but it only accepts ones. Two washers of four were out of order when we were there. All four dryers were functional. Dry time is 45 minutes, but you’ll need twice that to actually dry your clothes. Camp store and check-in area are one in the same. Store has some supplies, but appears exceptionally limited and very expensive. Aside from having hookups, laundry, and clean restrooms and showers, there are few other amenities. A small playground with equipment you’d buy at Wal-Mart or Costco kept the younger kids entertained. Most of the play equipment was in safe condition, other pieces looked very worn, but not unsafe. If you wanted a wood fire you could borrow a fire pit from management. No doubt they also sold wood. Our stay was too short to spend the energy on this, plus there may have been a burn ban in place. We didn’t see anyone with wood fires during our stay. While our stay was fine, the park wasn’t a destination in itself and the lack of space in our site was disappointing. The park would be more attractive if it had more trees and vegetation, especially around camp sites. This is a fine pass through location; A good jumping off point to visit the sites of Mt. Saint Hellens, but with other state and county parks in the area, look at all of your options and your camping needs to make the best choice. The view down the property into the valley where I-5 and Castle Rock are located is quite spectacular.

I'm a fan of the view. The owners, and park staff are nice. We came at just the right time to see the leaves start turning shades of autumn.
