Mt Baker-Snoqualmie/Verlot

Overview

The Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest near the Verlot Public Service Center offers a quintessential Pacific Northwest escape. Located along the scenic Mountain Loop Highway, this area serves as a gateway to rugged peaks and ancient forests. While the campgrounds here are managed by the Forest Service, they provide a well-maintained base for exploring the western slopes of the Cascades. Travelers can expect a serene environment where the focus remains on the surrounding natural beauty rather than modern resort frills.

Location & Surroundings

Nestled along the South Fork Stillaguamish River, the Verlot area is surrounded by towering hemlocks and Douglas firs. The sound of the rushing river provides a constant backdrop to your stay, while the dramatic silhouette of Mt. Pilchuck looms nearby. This location is roughly 11 miles east of Granite Falls, placing travelers deep within a lush temperate rainforest environment characterized by vibrant mosses and cool, crisp mountain air.

Amenities & Park Features

Accommodations in this area, including nearby sites like Gold Basin, lean toward a rustic camping experience. RVers should prepare for dry camping, as these forest sites typically offer vault toilets and potable water via hand pumps rather than full hookups or dump stations. Most campsites include a heavy-duty picnic table and a dedicated fire ring for evening gatherings. While some sites can accommodate larger trailers, the area is generally most accessible for small to mid-sized RVs seeking a genuine boondocking feel with the security of a managed campground.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The primary draw is the Big Four Ice Caves, a stunning geological feature accessible via a relatively easy trail just a short drive from the Verlot station. Enthusiastic hikers often tackle the steep switchbacks of Lake 22 or the climb to the Mt. Pilchuck Lookout for panoramic views of the Puget Sound. The Stillaguamish River offers seasonal opportunities for fly fishing and wading in the cold mountain water, making it a hub for outdoor recreation and photography.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is perfect for travelers who prioritize unfiltered access to nature over luxury amenities. It is an ideal fit for those seeking a digital detox, as cell service is notoriously limited within the deep river valley. If you enjoy falling asleep to the sound of a river and spending your days on the trail, the campgrounds near Verlot will suit your travel style perfectly. It is a favorite for self-contained campers who value privacy and scenic hiking.

Decently maintained campground with an incredibly nice camp host! However, be prepared to get absolutely no sleep! You will be right next to the road. Additionally, campsites are EXPENSIVE especially if you have more than one car. Good for a last minute overnight, but would not be my first choice.

We camp there every year. Have for years. This time something has changed. Staff there aren't doing things safely and right.I just visited over the Labor Day weekend. Long story short I fell over a high stump in between the restroom path. Unlit! Very dark! No way to see the danger before you! I'm in bed resting it off, hoping that I didn't break my Left side ribs or something worse! Missing work!! This is inexcusable! Camping you expect some things to be natural but we're talking a common area that should either be destumped or well lit! I'm thinking of getting a lawyer.

Nestled in along the twists and turns of the Verlot River, the Verlot Campground boasts amazing views with minimalist camping perfection. There are bathrooms easily accessible, with flush toilets, potable water spouts, and communal dumpsters. Of course being so close to the water, the mosquitos were mosquitoing 🤣 but a little citronella will do the trick! While I couldn’t see bringing my 40ft trailer here due to size restrictions (contrary to the website) it was perfect for the roof top tent set up! Small bonus (to me) this was out of cell reception 🙌🏻 so it was nice to be unplugged!

Nice off the grid campground, No hook-ups, but fresh water available at water spickets. Good restroom facilities, no showers or hot water. Not maintained very well. The men's room ran out of supplies on the 4th of July. They should have been restocked before hand.

Small but beautiful campground along the river. There are some gorgeous trails nearby. I highly recommend this camp area along with hiking Trail Twenty-Two! We had an enchanting two-day visit here. The only thing is there are no showers, so bring some wet wipes! We would love to come back again :)

Being fellow “ RiverRats” my husband and I love camping in our RV here! There are many sites right on the river with sunshine pretty much til sunset. There is a pretty nature walk that takes you along a stream and the river to the campground next door, Turlo. The are nice bathroom facilities but no electricity or showers. The camp host Greg, is very friendly and helpful. We love that it is a smaller, cozier vibe in the beautiful woods of Baker National Forest just a short jaunt out of Granite Falls and the spectacular Fish Ladder falls!

Pretty decent drive in camp site. Recommend trying to get the sites by the stream. Quiet area with set tent pitch sites, fire pits, and bathrooms. Running non-potable water available. Also just down the road before entering the national forest is a small market shop selling all sorts of goods.

I didn't camp there but drove through this weekend and was appalled at what I saw! Where are the trees, and why has the current caretakers taking care. Seems like the government gets to make more money from that also. All the good sites are reserved and there are no first come sites that are in a decent place. I for one will never camp there again and I've been camping up there for all my 62 years . Almost makes me cry

I had a great time can't wait for my next trip there! I camped closer to the road and saw each vehicle pass by. Next time I plan on being closer to the river. With beach access available to all I really enjoyed having my coffee while watching and listening to river go by. If you're planning on going there plan on going during the week, you'll have better odds of getting a great spot.
