New Discovery

Overview

New Discovery State Park offers a serene escape within the expansive Groton State Forest in Marshfield, Vermont. This destination is ideal for travelers who prioritize a deep connection with nature over modern resort luxuries. Surrounded by thousands of acres of protected woodland, the park provides a quiet atmosphere where the sounds of the forest replace highway noise. It serves as a central hub for exploring the Seven Lakes region of the forest.

Location & Surroundings

Situated in the rugged landscape of northeast Vermont, the park is nestled among rolling hills and dense hardwood forests. The area is characterized by its proximity to pristine bodies of water like Kettle Pond and Osmore Pond. The surrounding environment feels remote and untouched, offering a classic New England wilderness experience that changes beautifully with the seasons, especially during the vibrant autumn foliage when the maples turn brilliant shades of red.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground features well-spaced sites designed for those who enjoy a rustic stay. While there are no hookups available, the park provides essential facilities for self-contained RVers. Key features include:

  • Clean restrooms with hot coin-operated showers
  • A sanitary dump station and potable water spigots
  • Equestrian-friendly loops with paddocks and hitching posts
  • Gravel pads with fire rings and picnic tables

Many sites are shaded by mature trees, offering privacy and a sense of seclusion for every guest.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty of activities nearby. A short drive or hike leads to the Owl’s Head Overlook, which provides panoramic views of the forest and surrounding mountains. The Cross Vermont Trail passes through the area, offering miles of gravel paths for mountain biking and hiking. Fishing and paddling are popular at the various ponds within the state forest, providing ample opportunities for water-based recreation and wildlife viewing throughout the day.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is an excellent choice for self-contained RVers who are comfortable with dry camping and seek a peaceful, off-grid environment. It is particularly well-suited for hikers and equestrians looking to explore extensive trail systems directly from their campsite. Families who enjoy traditional camping activities like birdwatching and star gazing will find the quiet, dark skies of Marshfield to be a highlight of their trip, far from the lights of major cities.

Grassy area campsites are well spaced, clean bathrooms with showers 50 cents for 4 minutes at night, turn the bathroom lights off, and the grassy area is outstanding for viewing the stars. Tested the water, and It is pristine. Best time to go before school gets out.

Don & Karen (Troy & Kim) could not have been more accommodating. My truck died the second i rolled into my campsite---They let me use their office phone several times as cell service is a no-go. Don (who must have had experience as a mechanic) offered to come down to my site and take a look at my truck. He spent a good 1/2 hour trying to get it started, even crawling under it and banging on the starter. To top it off they were kind enough to run messages down to me from calls coming in from AAA. Above and beyond. Lean-to's are great-sites - -restrooms very clean--Osmore pond is awesome - great hiking trails and, its very quiet--I went there 2 weekends in a row, cant say enough good about it.

Myself and a few friends camped here for a few days this past week while exploring the local area. I could not be more impressed by this campground. It was the most well maintained campground I have ever stayed at. The staff at the campground are extremely friendly, and take excellent care of it. there are plenty of activities in the area to keep you busy. The weekend was a little busy at this campground, but once the weekend warriors left, this campground really was peaceful with only a few occupants. I would gladly stay here again.

Beautiful campground in Groton state forest. If camping, the big loop has more of a field vibe with sparse trees. The smaller loop has more private wooded sites. A large tent might have trouble on some of the wooded sites but 2-6 person tents should have no issue.

Well maintained campground. Friendly staff and well spaced camp sites. Close to quiet a few hiking trails and a lake walk. Beautiful fall colors viewing area near the campsite. Campsites do have 🧱 brick walled 🔥fire pits. Few camping spots for RVs to part and camp too. Firewood available for purchase $6 bundle. Checkout at 11am.

Super clean and open campground with incredibly friendly and helpful staff. Off the beaten path but close enough to civilization that you can head into town for dinner if you don’t feel like cooking at a site. But if you do, the fireplaces are some of the best I’ve seen: solid, large brick structures with large, stable cooking grates. Fresh water available in several spots and the bathrooms are nice! The best part is the walk/drive to the serene pond. It was so quiet and beautiful, I haven’t experienced the absence of sound like that in a long while.

I've been to a LOT of campgrounds. From Acadia to Green Mountains, all the way down to Kauai. New Discovery is one of the best, if not the best. It's open, easy to navigate, and has spaceous private sites. Everything is clean and well maintained. There is plenty of hiking, kayaking, and swimming opportunities. Super chill staff is icing on the proverbial cake. Highly recommended!
