Nez Perce-Clearwater/Giant White Pine

Overview

Giant White Pine Campground is a serene destination within the Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forest. Tucked away in the dense forests of northern Idaho, this park offers a classic, back-to-basics camping experience. It serves as a living tribute to the massive Western White Pines that once dominated this landscape, providing a shaded canopy and a cool retreat for RVers seeking a genuine connection with nature and a break from the summer heat.

Location & Surroundings

Situated near Harvard, ID, the campground is conveniently located along the scenic State Highway 6. The surrounding terrain is defined by the rolling hills of the Palouse meeting the deep greenery of the mountain timberlands. Travelers will find themselves surrounded by towering cedar and pine trees, creating a secluded atmosphere that feels miles away from civilization despite its easy road access for those traveling the White Pine Scenic Byway.

Amenities & Park Features

As a National Forest site, the amenities favor a rustic camping style rather than a modern resort feel. The park provides well-maintained sites that can accommodate a variety of rig sizes, though there are no hookups available. Guests can expect the following essentials:

  • Individual sites featuring sturdy picnic tables and fire rings
  • Access to vault toilets and potable water via seasonal hand pumps
  • Direct access to interpretive trailheads within the campground loop

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The primary draw is the Giant White Pine Trail, a gentle loop that winds through ancient stands of timber and offers education on the local ecosystem. A short drive leads visitors to the St. Joe River, famous for its crystal-clear waters and world-class fly fishing opportunities. For those interested in local culture, the nearby town of Potlatch offers a glimpse into Idaho's timber heritage and unique historic architecture, making it a perfect afternoon trip.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is an ideal match for self-contained RV travelers who prioritize peace, quiet, and forest immersion over modern luxuries. It is perfect for photographers, hikers, and families who want to unplug and enjoy a traditional forest setting. If you prefer the sound of the wind through the pines and the crackle of a campfire over the hum of a crowded RV resort, this Harvard hideaway is your perfect match.

Literally one of my favorite places that I've ever been to, I have gone at least four times in the last month and I will go again. I definitely recommend it to anyone! lots and lots and lots of walking paths.

Worth five stars but... A beautiful campground nestled in a national forest, with less than a dozen sites spaced far enough apart that you’d be hard-pressed to see your neighbor. I've been camping since my Cub Scout days, nearly 50 years ago, and have had many positive interactions with park rangers. I can't recall a time when they weren't friendly, helpful, and kind—until today. I understand the importance of rules, but a little sensitivity and kindness when dealing with elderly folks would go a long way. Based on my past experiences, other rangers would have made the situation better. In hindsight, the individual who confronted us was likely not an actual ranger, but perhaps a maintenance person having a rough day—at least, I hope that was the case.

Not a busy campground at all. Many trails for hiking/biking/dirt biking. Place was clean, and even the outhouses were not dirty. (They must be pretty new) Nice scenery, with many trees around. Extremely peaceful and quiet (except when a vehicle passes on the hwy, the only con of this place). There is a small creek on the north side of the sampground, which is cool. Spacious with privacy as well. Recommend to anyone who loves camping and the activities to go with it.

Quick and easy trails. Or hard and long trails. A lot of options plus it's nature 🙂

Followed Giant White Pine Trail to Bald Mountain. Full day hike of around 19 miles. Lots of shorter loop trails available too. Peaceful, scenic.

Amazing owners, very welcoming and accommodating. Helped us learn about rving and were willing to help when we had issues. Let my kids feed their ducks and seemed to care about their business and its perception.

Very nice some shade close to road so traffic noise, good hiking near by.
