Nez Perce-Clearwater/Powell

Overview

Powell Campground serves as a serene mountain getaway tucked deep within the Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests. Situated along the scenic banks of the Lochsa River, this site offers a traditional, rustic camping experience for travelers looking to disconnect from the digital world. It serves as a prime base for exploring the rugged Bitterroot Mountains and following the historic Lewis and Clark Trail. The atmosphere is exceptionally quiet, defined primarily by the sounds of the rushing river and the wind through the towering evergreens.

Location & Surroundings

Located approximately 60 miles east of the small community of Lowell, Idaho, the campground sits along U.S. Highway 12. This area is part of the Northwest Passage Scenic Byway, offering some of the most breathtaking drives in the Pacific Northwest. The surrounding terrain is dominated by the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness, providing a dense canopy of western red cedar and Douglas fir. The Lochsa River provides a constant, calming presence and immediate access to one of Idaho's most iconic waterways.

Amenities & Park Features

This National Forest facility provides a classic camping environment with paved parking spurs designed to accommodate a range of RV sizes. Visitors should note there are no electrical or sewer hookups, making it a true boondocking destination. The park features potable water hydrants and accessible vault toilets throughout the loops. Each individual campsite is outfitted with a heavy-duty picnic table and a steel fire ring, allowing for comfortable outdoor dining and evening campfires under the stars in a dense forest setting.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The region is a playground for outdoor enthusiasts. Thrill-seekers often visit for the world-class whitewater rafting available on the Lochsa River during the spring runoff. For a more relaxing experience, the nearby Jerry Johnson Hot Springs and Weir Creek Hot Springs offer natural thermal pools within hiking distance. History buffs will appreciate the Lolo Pass Visitor Center, which provides deep context on the Nez Perce Tribe and the Corps of Discovery. Extensive hiking trails are also accessible right from the Highway 12 corridor.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is perfect for RVers who prioritize natural beauty and solitude over resort-style amenities. It is a dream location for those who enjoy primitive camping and want to be fully immersed in the Idaho wilderness. Because of the limited cell service and lack of hookups, it is best suited for self-contained travelers who are prepared for a quiet, off-the-grid experience focused on fishing, hiking, and mountain exploration in a remote environment.

Spent six days here on the trails. Beautiful sights and trails, clean, clean, clean, never saw a bit of litter, and we traveled 354 miles. Great American adventure.

Went for a dip in the river on a crazy hot day. Was a pleasant time and the river was cooling. Kids had a blast!

Pack it in pack it out! Beautiful place in nature that deserves to be respected! Bring a trash bag to carry your trash back with you because there are no trash cans on the trail. Out house at trailhead sometimes doesn't have toilet paper. Ice cleats recommended in winter due to the icy steep nature of the trails.

Took the Lolo motorway from Powell the the end of the road, literally. The way out that we were told about at the visitor's center, was blocked by landsides and pavement falling away. According to the map they gave us at the visitor's center we would have to turn around and go back to Powell 90miles and 6 hours back. Fortunately we figured a way out. So District ranger please let people at the visitor center know the road conditions and any roadblocks. Other than spending 9hours traveling the motorway, which is extremely work the time(NOMINIVANS) The road is places is very rugged. It was worth the time gas and aggravation.
