No Highland American Legion/Upper Gresham Lake
Overview
Nestled within the expansive Northern Highland-American Legion State Forest, the Upper Gresham Lake Campground offers a quintessential Wisconsin Northwoods experience. Located just north of Boulder Junction, this site provides a quiet escape for RVers who value nature over modern luxuries. The park is managed by the state forest system and provides a peaceful lakeside setting where the primary soundtrack is the call of the loon. It is an ideal spot for those looking to disconnect from the digital world and reconnect with the great outdoors in a preserved wilderness environment.
Location & Surroundings
The park sits on the eastern shore of Upper Gresham Lake, a 362-acre body of water known for its clarity and natural beauty. The surrounding landscape is dominated by a dense canopy of pine and hardwood trees, characteristic of Vilas County. Being near Boulder Junction, travelers are positioned in the heart of one of the densest lake regions in the world. The proximity to the town provides convenient access to local supplies while maintaining a sense of total seclusion within the protected state forest lands that define the region.
Amenities & Park Features
As a rustic facility, the amenities here are designed to minimize the impact on the environment. You will find vault toilets and hand pumps for drinking water rather than modern plumbing or full hookups. Each site is equipped with a fire ring and a picnic table, perfect for traditional evening campfires. One of the standout features is the on-site boat launch, which allows campers easy access to the water for a day of paddling. While there is no electricity or sewer service, the spacious, wooded sites offer privacy that is rarely found in modern commercial RV resorts.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Water activities are the main draw here, with Upper Gresham Lake being a popular destination for musky and walleye fishing. For those who prefer land-based adventures, the Heart of Vilas County Paved Bike Trail is easily accessible nearby, offering over 50 miles of scenic riding through the woods. The surrounding state forest also boasts numerous hiking trails and wildlife viewing opportunities, where visitors often spot bald eagles, deer, and occasionally black bears in their natural habitat, making it a paradise for nature photographers.
Who This Park Is Best For
This campground is best suited for adventurous dry campers and those with smaller RVs or camper vans who do not require power or water connections. It is a haven for paddlers and anglers who want to be steps away from the shoreline at all times. If your travel style favors quiet evenings, starry skies, and a slower pace of life, this rustic state forest gem will perfectly fit your itinerary. It is ideal for travelers who want to trade modern conveniences for deep immersion in the Wisconsin woods.

One of the better spots where you can fish from the shore. Great fishing dock by the boat launch. Always do check out the daily fishing reports to help know when to fish.

If you like to really rough it, this is the place for you!! No electric, vault bathrooms, and pumping to get your water from a well. My family started coming up, every year, to this campground in the 1960's, and tradition continues today as the family grows. The sights are plenty far apart. The fishing is great. Wood is sold on sight. Every site along the lake have great paths to it. There is a boat dock and a large fishing dock. Can't go wrong if you want time for peace and quiet.

Nice campground on a nice lake… however, site 1503 shares water access with the campsite host. They weren’t there but still had our shared access blocked with their boat and a chair. This was an inconvenience for us as we had nowhere to park our boat. We will stay here again but not site 1503

My favorite out of the plethora of bike trail campgrounds in Boulder Junction but its very small and rustic and likely not for everyone.
