Oakwood Lakes
Overview
Oakwood Lakes State Park serves as a tranquil haven in the heart of South Dakota's glacial lake region. The park is historically significant, as the shaded peninsulas and abundant waters once provided a summer home for Native American tribes. Today, it offers a lush, multi-lake environment where RV travelers can immerse themselves in the natural beauty of the prairie while enjoying modern convenience. It is widely considered one of the most scenic state parks in the eastern part of the state, offering a perfect blend of history and recreation.
Location & Surroundings
Situated near Bruce, SD, this park is defined by eight interconnected glacial lakes that create a unique landscape of islands and winding shorelines. The surrounding region of Brookings County features fertile farmland and wide-open skies. The park's layout allows many campsites to feel private and secluded, tucked away among mature hardwood trees and overlooking the calm, blue waters. Its proximity to the Big Sioux River valley adds to the ecological diversity, making it a lush oasis in the middle of the Great Plains.
Amenities & Park Features
The campground is well-equipped for modern RVing, offering numerous sites with 30 and 50-amp electrical hookups. Facilities include modern comfort stations with flush toilets and hot showers, ensuring a comfortable stay regardless of the weather. Visitors can make use of the on-site boat ramps to launch fishing vessels or kayaks. The park also features a designated swimming beach, a popular disc golf course, and several picnic shelters for group gatherings, along with a convenient dump station for departing RVs.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor recreation is the primary draw, with the lakes providing prime spots for walleye and perch fishing throughout the year. The extensive trail system is perfect for hiking and mountain biking, offering glimpses of local wildlife and migratory birds. Just a short drive away, you can visit South Dakota State University in Brookings or explore the historic Mortensen Horse Barn located right within the park boundaries. During the winter, the trails transform into a destination for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is an excellent choice for outdoor enthusiasts and families who value a quiet, nature-focused camping experience. It appeals to those who enjoy water sports and appreciate the slower pace of a state park setting compared to a commercial resort. Because of its spacious sites and natural shade, it is also highly recommended for long-term travelers looking for a scenic and restful stopover while traversing the Midwestern United States.

One of the secrets of South Dakota. Beautiful old oak forest. Multiple lakes and a very family oriented campground. One of my favorites

This park is everything you could ever hope for in a park. There are lots of trails, camping, cabins, restrooms, picnic areas, a beach, playgrounds, and more. The Shining Star Overlook is our favorite spot for a picnic, or even for just enjoying the scenery. It's beautiful! There is so much to enjoy at Oakwood!

I went here on some unseasonably warm February days. Beautiful park, lots of biking trails (which were too wet/muddy this time of year), but very well kept up, even in the off season.

A group of us stayed in 2 cabins for a disc golf trip. They were perfect size, just for sleeping. The grounds were beautiful. The 9 hole course on site was pretty fun, we played it multiple times in the evenings. Would highly recommend!

First time here yesterday with my wife and two young boys....6-10-20. we had a nice spacious and fairly secluded spot for our tent site 112 . Wish I would of brought my kayak to enjoy all the various lakes etc. The campground as a whole was very well maintained and all the staff very nice. I'd definitely recommend visiting.
