Ocala/Big Scrub
Overview
The Ocala/Big Scrub campground provides a rugged and authentic experience within the heart of the Ocala National Forest near Umatilla, FL. Known for being part of the largest sand pine scrub forest in the world, this destination is a favorite for those who appreciate the raw beauty of Florida’s interior. It serves as a central hub for outdoor recreation, offering a sense of seclusion and direct access to some of the state’s most unique ecological landscapes and sandy terrain.
Location & Surroundings
Situated in the southern portion of the forest, the surroundings are defined by the Big Scrub ecosystem, a high and dry landscape characterized by sandy soil and dense palmettos. While the park feels miles away from civilization, its location near Umatilla provides a convenient base for exploring the diverse habitats of the region. Travelers will find themselves immersed in a world of sand pines and scrub oaks, offering a stark contrast to Florida’s typical coastal environments.
Amenities & Park Features
This is a primitive camping area that caters to self-contained RVers and tent campers looking for a peaceful escape. The park features basic amenities such as vault toilets and a hand pump for potable water, though there are no electric or sewer hookups available. The primary draw for many visitors is the direct access to OHV trails, allowing riders to unload and hit the sand tracks immediately. Each site is equipped with a fire ring and a picnic table, encouraging a traditional camping lifestyle.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Adventure seekers often visit specifically for the Ocala North OHV Trail System, which offers over a hundred miles of riding through the forest. For those looking to cool off, the crystal-clear waters of Alexander Springs are just a short drive away, providing opportunities for swimming, snorkeling, and canoeing. Nature enthusiasts can also hike portions of the Florida National Scenic Trail or look for rare wildlife like the Florida scrub jay and black bears that call this forest home.
Who This Park Is Best For
This destination is specifically designed for OHV enthusiasts and travelers who prefer a rustic, off-grid experience. Because of the sandy terrain and lack of hookups, it is ideal for those with smaller rigs or toy haulers who are prepared for dry camping. It is the perfect choice for visitors who prioritize trail access and a quiet, natural setting over modern resort luxuries, offering a true sense of immersion in the Florida wilderness.

Good remote campground no hookups but has a bath house and you can run your generator and drive ATVs right out of the campsite

I really enjoyed my time there. It was pretty cold when we were there. But there's so many different springs close to this area. The people at the store was very friendly.

Had a great time camping here. Bathrooms are clean and have plenty of warm water. The camp also has a dish washing station we found cool if we were to camp in a tent. The camp ground host were great people. Can’t wait to come out and camp again.

Decent ohv area and first come first serve. 20 a night for camping 10 for ohv day use. Bathrooms were nice but mens bathroom could use better lighting. Showers were warm and have to press a button every 5 seconds. 1 star since the woman host was so rude, disrespectful and a racist.

Friendly staff you can park your car anywhere in the park if your backpacking or hiking Okay the camp grounds keeper or ranger whatever lady said you know if we park inside we pay the 20 bucks that you know get a little more coverage because they see who comes in and out their trailer was there. There's a discount if you have like a frequent flyer card or something I don't know. We have refilled our water bottles there and was pretty clean and quiet when we were there but imagine it gets filled when the time of the year or the weekends right.

If you like off grid camping, then this is the place for you. There are no hook ups here. OHV trails are connected to this campground. We enjoyed watching people riding their toys and having a great time. In the evening, all the day use people leave and the campground turns into a quiet and relaxing place. Our campground hosts were lovely.

If you're looking for a place to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life or just a place to observe all of Florida's wildlife this is a great option for that. There are multiple springs and hundreds of lakes that you can fish or just get in a nice swim.
