Okanogan-Wenatchee/Johnny Creek

Overview

Johnny Creek Campground offers a quintessential Pacific Northwest camping experience within the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest. Located along the scenic Icicle Creek, this destination is favored for its deep woods and rushing water. It serves as a rustic retreat for those looking to disconnect from the modern world and immerse themselves in the rugged beauty of the Cascade Mountains. This spot is perfect for those seeking a genuine outdoor adventure.

Location & Surroundings

Situated roughly 12 miles from the Bavarian-themed town of Leavenworth, the park is nestled in the Icicle Creek Canyon. The surrounding landscape is dominated by dense stands of Douglas fir and Ponderosa pine. Steep granite cliffs rise on either side of the valley, making it a dramatic setting for travelers who appreciate mountain vistas and the constant soundtrack of the nearby river.

Amenities & Park Features

This is a traditional forest service site, meaning dry camping is the standard here. While you will not find electric or water hookups, the park provides essential features:

  • Reliable vault toilets and seasonal potable water access.
  • Individual sites equipped with heavy-duty picnic tables and fire rings.
  • Deep, forested pads designed for smaller to medium-sized RVs.

The natural layout ensures a more intimate connection with the environment than typical commercial parks.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor recreation is the primary draw, with world-class rock climbing and hiking trails just minutes away. Visitors often explore the nearby Enchantments trailhead or head into Leavenworth for unique shopping and dining. The creek itself is a popular spot for fishing and photography. Whether you are trekking to alpine lakes or enjoying a local bratwurst, the variety of activities nearby ensures every day is full.

Who This Park Is Best For

This campground is ideal for the self-contained RVer who prioritizes scenery over luxury. If you enjoy falling asleep to the sound of a river and do not mind a lack of Wi-Fi, you will feel right at home. It is a perfect fit for outdoor enthusiasts and families looking for a tranquil basecamp to explore the spectacular trails and cultural charm of Central Washington.

Great fcfs car camping sites right next to Icicle Creek, with clean toilets, nice fire rings, and bear lockers. Overall fun for a couple nights with a group. Not sure if it's because it was earlier in the season but the potable water at the campground was yellow/brown and contained sediment. Would recommend bringing own water or filter from the creek.

This was such a beautiful place to camp!! So glad we stumbled across it. It was a nice, quiet, and clean campground, nestled right in God's beautiful creation. If you're looking for a great place to camp near Leavenworth, look no further!

Great spot. $24 per tent site per night. Friendly camp hosts. Spot 15 is stellar. The river is so loud at the campground, which was great for sleeping!

Enjoyed our stay. Not to crowded or right next to the next campsite.

Small site but is well kept and the Bathrooms were serviced each morning. Each site has picnic table and fire pit with a grill that swings over the fire so you can use it for cooking. Great views next to the Wenatchee. Would've given it a fifth star if we were able to reserve a site. Walk in sites only.

Great campground not far from Leavenworth, WA. Campsites all had picnic tables and fire pits. The lower campground is along the river, can hear the water rushing by and good amount of trees between you and the next campsite. The upper campground is across the road and away from the river if you'd prefer more quiet surroundings (Upper was also cheaper than the lower, likely since it's not along the river). Vault toilets w/ hand sanitizer, no showers and the water spigot seemed a bit rusty. I'd recommend bringing drinking water. Fantastic getaway spot!

Scenic, private sites, most on the river with mountain views. Fire pits, huge picnic tables, pit toilets, trash barrels, no hookups. Paved road and flat, paved parking at each site. Great for dry camping rv's, a few sites were tents only. Very cold at night in early September, but hardly any neighbors this time of year either. Lots of hiking trails along Icicle Rd, most of them intermediate to strenuous level. Plenty of places to stop along Icicle Rd to just take in the incredible views. Only 15 minutes to town (and cell service).
