Okanogan-Wenatchee/Klipchuck

Overview

Nestled within the towering evergreens of the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest, Klipchuck Campground offers a quintessential North Cascades experience. Located just off the scenic Highway 20, this Forest Service gem provides a serene escape from the bustle of modern life. It serves as a prime basecamp for those seeking to immerse themselves in the rugged beauty of the Methow Valley while enjoying a traditional camping atmosphere. The park is well-regarded for its spacious sites and the peaceful soundtrack provided by the nearby Early Winters Creek.

Location & Surroundings

Situated near the mountain community of Mazama, WA, the campground sits at an elevation that keeps it comfortably cool during the summer months. The landscape is dominated by mature ponderosa pines and Douglas firs, providing ample shade and privacy between campsites. Travelers are treated to dramatic views of the surrounding granite peaks, including the impressive Goat Wall. Its proximity to the North Cascades National Park boundary makes it a strategic stop for those traveling the iconic Cascade Loop.

Amenities & Park Features

As a rustic Forest Service facility, Klipchuck prioritizes a natural setting over high-tech hookups. RVers will find specific features tailored for self-contained travel:

  • Paved parking pads that can accommodate various rig sizes and trailers.
  • Seasonal potable water accessible via traditional hand pumps.
  • Access to well-maintained vault toilets located throughout the loops.

Each site is equipped with a sturdy picnic table and a fire ring, perfect for evening gatherings under a canopy of stars. The lack of cell service here enhances the feeling of a true wilderness retreat.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will find themselves at the doorstep of adventure with the Driveway Butte Trailhead located directly within the campground. This challenging hike rewards trekkers with panoramic views of the Okanogan-Wenatchee wilderness. A short drive leads to the charming town of Winthrop, known for its Western-themed storefronts and local shops. Additionally, the Early Winters Creek offers opportunities for wading, while the nearby North Cascades Highway provides endless pull-offs for photography and sightseeing.

Who This Park Is Best For

This campground is an ideal match for boondocking enthusiasts and RVers who value solitude and scenery over resort-style amenities. It is perfect for travelers who want to disconnect and spend their days hiking or exploring the North Cascades National Park. If your travel style involves campfire cooking and waking up to the scent of fresh pine needles rather than searching for Wi-Fi, Klipchuck provides the authentic Pacific Northwest experience you are looking for.

Well... I would not recommend following the Google pin as it is just a random point on a dirt road, but... It is a large national forest. If you do follow Google's pin there is a nice view over the Columbia right after you turn off the highway, and then follow the road back to the pin and there is an okay view up the valley. Not much else to see from the car.

I absolutely love this National Park. There is so much recreation to be had. Whether it is 2 wheels, 4 wheels, 2 legs, or 4 legged, you will find plenty to do. All outdoor recreation permitted, just leave it better than you found it is our motto.

It had rained yesterday and the trail was moist but not muddy. It was cool under the trees. Lots of butterflies over the blooming flowers. My younger companions compared the forest with a castle, because of the tall big trees and the shades. It is magical. Definitely bring bug spray. Lots of mosquitoes.
