Okanogan-Wenatchee/Swauk

Overview

Tucked away within the majestic landscape of the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest, the Swauk area offers a quintessential Pacific Northwest mountain experience. Located near Cle Elum, WA, this destination serves as a serene sanctuary for travelers looking to disconnect from the hustle of city life. The park is defined by its towering ponderosa pines and the crisp mountain air of the Cascades, providing a scenic alpine backdrop for every campsite. It is a place where the natural environment dictates the pace of the day, making it a favorite for those who appreciate the quiet majesty of Washington's high country.

Location & Surroundings

The campground is situated along the historic Highway 97 near Blewett Pass, placing it in a prime location for exploring the transition between the lush western forests and the arid eastern slopes. The surrounding terrain is a mix of rugged mountain ridges and gentle forest floors carpeted in wildflowers during the spring. Because of its elevation, visitors enjoy cooler summer temperatures compared to the lowlands. The proximity to Swauk Creek adds a soothing auditory element to the stay, while the lack of urban light pollution makes it an exceptional spot for nighttime stargazing.

Amenities & Park Features

As a traditional National Forest destination, the amenities here prioritize a rustic and authentic camping experience. The park features spacious forest sites designed for self-contained RVs, offering a sense of privacy rarely found in private resorts. Each site is equipped with a sturdy picnic table and a heavy-duty fire ring for evening campfires. While you will not find full hookups here, the park provides access to potable water hand pumps and well-maintained vault toilets. It is a dry-camping destination that encourages a low-impact lifestyle, allowing the beauty of the forest to remain the primary focus.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Recreation is the heartbeat of the Swauk area. Hikers often flock to the Swauk Discovery Trail, an interpretive loop that offers stunning views and insights into the local ecology. The region is also steeped in history, known for its historic gold mining district where enthusiasts still explore the geological wonders of the area. For a change of pace, a short drive leads to the town of Cle Elum for local dining, or further north to the Bavarian-themed village of Leavenworth. Winter travelers also use this area as a base for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing along the forest service roads.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for independent RV travelers who prefer the solitude of the forest over the amenities of a luxury resort. It is a perfect match for those with smaller to mid-sized rigs who are comfortable with dry camping and seek a direct connection to nature. Outdoor enthusiasts and photographers will find endless inspiration in the surrounding trails and vistas. If your goal is to trade Wi-Fi signals for rustling leaves and mountain views, Swauk Campground provides the perfect setting for a quiet, rejuvenating getaway in the heart of Washington State.

Great retro camping experience. Make sure you cross the creek and take the trail south to the lookout point!

Short hike up the trail is a great boulder to climb, and this is the only baseball field on the Forest.

Sauk Creek Campground is a nice campground to visit in Eastern Washington. Good camping spaces. Good picnic tables. Swuak Creek was nice to take photos of the water in the creek by swauk campground.

This station is not available for public use with hours of 8:30 -12:30 then 1 - 4:30. As a publicly funded program I am not sure how the public is being served if we enjoy parks after work or on the weekends. We found this to be true of all Wenatchee and Lake Chelan ranger and park stations.

Quite a nice campground right off Blewett Pass. The campsites are spaced far apart in the midst of really big trees. There is a loop trail across the creek that goes up to rock formations. The best one is Sculpture Rock. Also notice huge ant piles on the north end.
