Ontonagon County Park

Overview

Ontonagon County Park offers a peaceful and scenic retreat situated on the western shore of Lake Gogebic. This county-managed facility is well-regarded for its natural beauty and direct access to the largest inland lake in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. It provides a classic, northwoods camping experience where the focus remains on the surrounding environment rather than luxury resort features. RVers will find a tranquil setting sheltered by a dense canopy of hardwoods, making it a perfect destination for those looking to disconnect from the digital world and enjoy the Great Lakes region.

Location & Surroundings

Situated near Marenisco, MI, the park sits along the quiet western edge of the water. The surrounding area is part of the vast Ottawa National Forest, characterized by rolling hills, ancient forests, and abundant wildlife. This specific position allows for stunning sunset views across the lake from many of the campsites. Because the park is removed from major urban centers, it offers campers an incredibly quiet atmosphere with exceptional stargazing opportunities on clear nights. The terrain is gently sloped toward the shoreline, providing easy access to the water's edge.

Amenities & Park Features

The park features several dozen campsites, many of which are spacious enough to accommodate modern RVs and trailers. While the facilities favor a rustic style, several sites offer electric hookups for added convenience during your stay. Essential amenities include a well-maintained boat launch for lake access, a designated swimming beach, and a playground area for families traveling with children. Each site is equipped with a picnic table and fire ring for evening gatherings. Visitors also have access to vault toilets and a hand pump for fresh water, maintaining the park’s authentic outdoor feel.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor recreation is the primary draw for visitors to this region. Lake Gogebic is a premier destination for walleye and perch fishing, and the park’s ramp makes it easy to launch for a full day on the water. For those willing to explore further, the spectacular Bond Falls is within a short driving distance for a day trip. Additionally, the park serves as an excellent base camp for exploring the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness to the north, where hikers can discover the famous Lake of the Clouds and miles of rugged, scenic trails.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for travelers who prefer a quiet, rustic atmosphere over the bustle of high-end RV resorts. It is a fantastic choice for dedicated anglers, kayakers, and nature photographers looking to immerse themselves in the Upper Peninsula’s wilderness. Families who enjoy traditional camping activities like swimming and evening campfires will find the environment very welcoming. If you are a self-contained RVer looking for a serene lakeside escape that prioritizes nature and simplicity, this park is a perfect fit for your travel style.

Spent one night here. Horrible experience. Left site to get supplies and firewood, and someone set their tent up in the tent site and we had to move. Then people in the next site left their lights on, seemingly so people could see the site from space… but hey at least the boogie man didn’t get us.

Nice, clean RV park with good sized wooded lots with plenty of room between campers. We were in site #45, which backed up to the woods. The lake has a boat ramp and you can also dock your boat in the sand/beach area. The bathrooms and showers are very clean. John, the host, goes above and beyond! Great place, we will definitely be back.

Small park with a shelter, dock for boating, and old dated playground area (in good shape though), and small beach. Nice wide views of Lake Gigebic. Decent size camping areas, though we didn't experience those.
