Ottawa/Black River Harbor

Overview

Ottawa/Black River Harbor offers a tranquil escape within the Ottawa National Forest in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. This destination is defined by its deep connection to Lake Superior and the powerful Black River. Managed by the U.S. Forest Service, the area provides a rustic camping experience where the sounds of the forest and crashing waves replace city noise. It is a place for those who value natural beauty over modern luxury, offering a deep immersion into the Northwoods.

Location & Surroundings

Situated at the end of the Black River Scenic Byway north of Bessemer, MI, the park sits where the river meets the vast waters of Lake Superior. The surroundings are characterized by old-growth hemlocks and hardwood forests. The geography is dramatic, featuring rugged cliffs and rocky shorelines. Travelers arriving here will find themselves at one of the few protected harbors on this stretch of the Great Lake, making it a unique geographical landmark.

Amenities & Park Features

As a National Forest site, the amenities focus on essential needs rather than resort-style luxuries. RVers will find paved and gravel pads suitable for various rig sizes, though hookups are not available. Key features include:

  • Access to potable water and vault toilets.
  • A scenic suspension bridge leading to Lake Superior beaches.
  • Dedicated picnic areas and a public boat launch.

This setup encourages a self-contained camping style that respects the surrounding environment.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The primary draw is the series of five spectacular waterfalls located along the Black River, accessible via well-maintained hiking trails. Visitors can explore segments of the North Country National Scenic Trail, which winds through the area. For water enthusiasts, the harbor serves as a gateway for lake trout fishing and boating on Lake Superior. The nearby town of Bessemer offers a glimpse into the region’s mining history, while the forest provides endless opportunities for wildlife photography.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for adventurous RVers who prefer dry camping and want to be steps away from wilderness trails. It is perfect for photographers, hikers, and those seeking a quiet retreat from digital life. If your travel style involves boondocking or rustic stays in exchange for world-class scenery and direct access to the Great Lakes, this hidden gem in the Upper Peninsula is a must-visit destination.

End of the road went across the bridge. It brought you to the beach and rainbow falls.

Great place! Nice long open beach with cool rocks. Big rock piers you can walk out on. Slightly scary if you’re afraid of heights but safe feeling suspension bridge. Nice trail to rainbow falls with access to walk along the rocks RIGHT next to the crazy river.

Very nice Fall afternoon spent there. There were still people swimming! My wife and I looked for some cool rocks, and found an eye agate. Definitely worth a stop to check it out!

Nice park and walking paths to Lake Superior. Cool suspension bridge as well. It does require a National Park pass for parking.

Lake Superior the greatest of the great lakes. Hard to believe it's a lake really. The beach is nothing like anything I have seen before. Best rock hounding beach. The area was clean well kept and over all beautiful. Parking was about 5 minutes of a walk from the beach. It wasn't even hard to get the wagon full of beach toys chairs and goodies down the path. Can't wait to be able to bring my family here again.

The waterfalls are beautiful, and the lakefront shows the power of the great lake with numerous logs and driftwood. We even found some cool rocks. Neat place to visit!

Awesome beach to visit and search for that special Agate rock! Lots of timber had been washed up onto the beach, so we saw little huts built everywhere. It was worth the visit with my wife and furry son!🙂

It begins by starting a beautiful drive towards lake Superior from Ironwood. The park itself has nice picnic grounds. It usually has a $5 fee but on Thursdays it's free. The suspension bridge funnels you down to a nice long beach full of large trees that have drifted up onto the beach. The walk up to rainbow falls is also quite worth it, the hike is 3/4 of a mile Surrounded by beautiful trees along the way. You can either pay by check or cash only
