Ottawa/Marion Lake

Overview

The Marion Lake Campground, located within the vast Ottawa National Forest, offers a peaceful retreat for RVers looking to disconnect. Situated near Watersmeet, Michigan, this destination is defined by its pristine 297-acre lake and lush woodland scenery. Travelers often find this park to be a quiet sanctuary where the focus remains on the surrounding wilderness and the gentle rhythms of nature. It provides a classic Northwoods experience that highlights the rugged beauty of the Upper Peninsula.

Location & Surroundings

Located just north of the village of Watersmeet, the park sits within a dense forest of sugar maple, birch, and hemlock. The area is famously known for its diverse water systems and proximity to the Sylvania Wilderness. The campground surrounds Marion Lake, which is noted for its exceptional water clarity and scenic shoreline. This high-elevation region offers a cooler climate during the summer, making it a refreshing escape for those traveling through the interior of the Upper Peninsula.

Amenities & Park Features

As a Forest Service site, the amenities focus on primitive camping rather than modern resort luxuries. While there are no individual electricity or sewer hookups at the sites, the park features several key facilities to support your stay:

  • Vault toilets and pressurized drinking water from wells.
  • A sandy swimming beach and designated picnic area for families.
  • A paved boat launch for easy access to the water.

Many sites are generously shaded and spaced well apart, offering a private feel that commercial parks often lack.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor recreation is the main event in this corner of Michigan. Fishing for walleye and bass is popular on the lake, while the Marion Lake Trail provides a scenic path for hikers and birdwatchers. Just a short drive away, visitors can marvel at the spectacular Bond Falls or explore the Agate Falls Scenic Site. The Watersmeet Trout Hatchery is also nearby, offering an educational look at the local aquatic ecosystem and regional conservation efforts.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for self-contained RVers who prefer the sound of wind in the trees over the hum of a highway. It is a perfect fit for families who enjoy traditional lakeside activities like swimming, canoeing, and campfire cooking. If you value privacy and a deep connection to the environment, this rustic setting will suit you perfectly. It is best suited for those looking to trade digital connectivity for a view of the starry night sky.

A several mile drive on gravel roads off Highway 2 brings you to this sizable rustic campground on a top-tier lake. A portion of this campground is open year-round, the remaining portion is only open during summer. Lakeside sites come in several varieties. Some are flatter to the water, others are higher on a ridge.

Beautiful lake with super clear water. Lots of camping sites, water and toilet access, and off grid. I'd like to visit again with some more time and a boat.

Our family has been coming here for about 16 years now. A nice place to turn off the daily life and relax in nature.

Beautiful place to camp. Stairs from sites to the lake and a nice area to tie your boat up at each site. Will definitely go back again.
