Ouachita Lake - COE/Big Fir
Overview
Big Fir is a serene Corps of Engineers (COE) managed area located on the northern shore of the expansive Lake Ouachita. Known for its tranquil atmosphere and stunning natural beauty, this site offers a traditional outdoor experience far from the noise of commercial developments. Travelers seeking a scenic lakeside retreat will find that this location provides a rare opportunity to connect with the rugged landscape of the Ouachita National Forest in a peaceful setting.
Location & Surroundings
Tucked away in Mount Ida, Arkansas, the park is surrounded by lush hardwood forests and rolling hills. Lake Ouachita is famous for being one of the cleanest lakes in the United States, featuring thousands of acres of clear water and hundreds of uninhabited islands. The immediate area around Big Fir is characterized by steep shorelines and dense pine canopies, offering a secluded feel while remaining within a short driving distance of local conveniences and unique geological sites.
Amenities & Park Features
As a primitive camping destination, Big Fir focuses on the basics to maintain its rustic charm. The park provides vault toilets and basic picnic facilities at each site, including fire rings and tables. There are no electric or water hookups, making it an ideal choice for self-contained RVs or those who enjoy dry camping. The most prominent feature is the convenient boat ramp, which provides easy access for anglers and recreational boaters looking to explore the lake's hidden coves and rocky points.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Visitors are perfectly positioned to explore the Quartz Capital of the World in nearby Mount Ida, where several public mines allow you to dig for your own crystals. Outdoor enthusiasts can access the Lake Ouachita Vista Trail (LOViT) for miles of scenic hiking and mountain biking. The lake itself is a premier destination for striped bass fishing and scuba diving due to its exceptional water clarity, while the nearby state park offers additional interpretive programs and nature centers.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is ideal for off-grid enthusiasts and boaters who prioritize water access and quiet nights over modern luxuries. Because the sites are primitive and the access roads can be winding, it is best suited for smaller campers, truck campers, or van lifers who are fully prepared for a boondocking experience. If you are looking to escape the crowds and enjoy an authentic Arkansas wilderness experience, Big Fir is a perfect match for your travel style.

This place is wonderful, and the owners are wonderful people. We have enjoyed our time here. We will definitely be back, and will recommend Little Fir Landing to friends, and Family.

The lake is very clean. The campground setup is a little confusing and not marked very well between sites. There is no playground at all for children. The grounds were quite and clean. Each site is large compared to many.

I find this to be one of the most amazing places to relax and enjoy good clean family fun. Excellent fishing. Surrounded by mountains and national parks. Only 1 hr drive to Hot Springs National Park located on beautiful Lake Hamilton; where there art Galleries, live theater, horse racing and much much more!
